Book excerpt: A hilarious book about parent and child relationships for fans of Ian Falconer and Jon Agee--a perfect gift idea for Father's Day and beyond! Little Jumbo just can't understand why his dad is having such a bad day. It couldn't be the raisins Little Jumbo spit out at the ceiling or the bath he refused to take--after all, Little Jumbo's dad knew he hated raisins and had already taken a bath that week! Luckily, Little Jumbo is such a thoughtful elephant that he decides to turn his dad's bad day around with some of his--ahem, his dad's--favorite things. How to Cheer up Dad is a standout debut featuring a charmingly oblivious little elephant with serious pluck and staying power. It turns the parent-child roles upside down is a great book for dads and the kids who make them laugh.

Book On the Line

Download or read book On the Line written by Serena Williams and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the biggest stars in tennis, Serena Williams has captured every major title. Her 2009 Australia Open championship earned her the #1 world ranking for the third time in her illustrious career - and marked only the latest exclamation point on a life well and purposefully lived. As a young girl, Serena began training with an adult-sized racquet that was almost as big as her. Rather than dropping the racquet, Serena saw it as a challenge to overcome-and she has confronted every obstacle on her path to success with the same unflagging spirit. From growing up in the tough, hardscrabble neighborhood of Compton, California, to being trained by her father on public tennis courts littered with broken glass and drug paraphernalia, to becoming the top women's player in the world, Serena has proven to be an inspiration to her legions of fans both young and old. Her accomplishments have not been without struggle: being derailed by injury, devastated by the tragic shooting of her older sister, and criticized for her unorthodox approach to tennis. Yet somehow, Serena always manages to prevail. Both on the court and off, she's applied the strength and determination that helped her to become a champion to successful pursuits in philanthropy, fashion, television and film. In this compelling and poignant memoir, Serena takes an empowering look at her extraordinary life and what is still to come.

Book My Story

Download or read book My Story written by Bessie Epps Colvin and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Story The Setup My story has been partially told so many times to my students and my grandchildren that I realized that I need to just print it. So many people want to know how it was back in the day. I promised myself that I would write it down whenever I got the chance. Well, the cancer treatments allowed me the time to do so. Also, this was a good time because my aunt and brothers and sister are all still alive. They helped to reinforce how I remembered the events. It still hurts to relive the two brothers going off to the Vietnam War and only one getting back alive. Then I realize that my life was already planned, already set up by God. I just needed to follow the plan and continue to be a beacon of light for others to see. I hope that this book might uplift someone else who is struggling with a serious illness and has not realized that we should rejoice in what God is doing in our lives even though we don't understand. Enjoy!

Book excerpt: One of the most versatile artists ever to emerge from South Louisiana, Butch Hornsby was an accomplished singer and songwriter, with a difficult personal life. A talented man, Hornsby defeated his own talent through a series of bad decisions. Dirtdobber Blues, a novelization of Hornsby's life, was written by his close friend Cyril Vetter. Through the music, images, and text, Hornsby moves from the strawberry fields of Amite, Louisiana, to the bars of Baton Rouge and into the unforgiving arena of the recording industry. Along the way, Vetter provides glimpses into the musician's inspiration--a tumultuous young love, a stint in Hollywood, his family's return to Louisiana--and pieces together the arc of Hornsby's life, littered with poor decisions, crowned by artistic success, and concluding with the redemptive power of love.

Book excerpt: "Can you tell me about the most interesting, wonderful person you ever knew?" Most of us could answer this question with little hesitation. The person you have in mind may be famous or obscure, male or female, living or dead. She could be the neighbor who was kind to you as a child, she could be your wife or your grandmother. He could be an old friend from college, a fishing buddy or business acquaintance. Whoever the person is, they are special and you wish other people could know them. In this book, I introduce my special person to the world. He was my grandfather. His name was G.W. Lunsford. He was born in the Southern Appalachian Mountains over one hundred years ago. He raised his family, worked hard and did the best he could. He endured heartbreak that would be psychologically lethal to the average person. He smiled and found good in every person he knew. This book is a mirror of his life. It is an unusual and fascinating blend of fact, folklore and fiction. It is a history book, a text in sociology and a biography. The story is straightforward. Lessons about life are hidden within the pages.

He sees the world differently than most, and he feels like he has no idea what he’s doing when it comes to raising his 15-year-old daughter, Cleo. She also feels like he has no idea what he’s doing, especially now that her mom is gone. They were both better off when Jana was around—Dave's wife, Cleo's mother. But now she's not, and they are left to figure out life on their own. Dave dedicates his attention to his newfound hobby of doomsday prepping, researching the various ways the world could end. Cleo feels like her world already has. Everything changes when neighbors move in, threatening their isolation in the hills of San Juan Capistrano. Cleo is intrigued by the new girl, Edie, and soon finds out the intrigue is mutual. Dave, not at all intrigued, is forced to come to terms with everything he cannot control. As they struggle to live in the present, both Dave and Cleo must dare to revisit the tragic past they share. What happened to Jana? Who was she, really? Who are they without her? Ways the World Could End is a story of grief, friendship, and love—the love between parents and children, between spouses, between teenagers, and between strangers. It is a story that requires us to consider the bounds of forgiveness, what we’re willing and not willing to forgive, and reminds us that often the hardest thing to forgive is ourselves.
