Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change during the 20th and 21st centuries culminates in catastrophic changes to the planet as Nature declares war on humanity. Inches of polar ice cap melt, and evaporation bloats the atmosphere until finally, it begins to rain-and rain. The planet grows soggy, suffering manifest changes in topography as the earth turns into a quagmire, slipping and sliding beneath the feet of the humans who live on its surface. Earthquakes and mega-storms become more frequent and deadly. Industries suffer, with agriculture taking the biggest hit, and the economy teeters, then collapses. Physicist Noah Eastermann, determined to ensure a future beyond what others predict is the beginning of the end for the planet, builds a secret stronghold, dubbed Phoenix Nest. He smuggles in scientists and scholars until he has gathered a microcosm of world knowledge. Unable to program intelligence itself, the scientists instead enhance the brain's ability to absorb and retain knowledge and devise a way for this enhancement to pass from parent to child. Long after mankind plummetis off the top of the heap to land face first in the mud, descendants of Phoenix Nest, known as Preservationists, are hidden among the uneducated Morons in what was once the United States. Shelana is one of these "Presers." To carry out her duty as historian, she must battle to survive prejudice directed not at race, religion or means, but at intelligence. Feeding and spreading this prejudice is the powerful, mysterious and bloodthirsty group known as Myths. Vernon, leader of the Myths, is determined to wipe out the Preservationists and to control the redevelopment of civilization. Vernon has made one mistake that may ruin his plans and cost him his life, a mistake the Myth leader doesn't even remember he made. But Shelana does.

Book Autobiographical Memory and the Construction of A Narrative Self

Download or read book Autobiographical Memory and the Construction of A Narrative Self written by Robyn Fivush and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2003-05-14 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a truism in psychology that self and autobiographical memory are linked, yet we still know surprisingly little about the nature of this relation. Scholars from multiple disciplines, including cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, anthropology, and philosophy have begun theorizing and writing about the ways in which autobiographical memory is organized, the role that narratives play in the development of autobiographical memory, and the relations between autobiographical memory, narrative, and self concept. If narratives are a critical link between memory and self, then it becomes apparent that the roles of language and social interaction are paramount. These are the issues addressed in this volume. Although individual authors offer their own unique perspectives in illuminating the nature of the link between self and memory, the contributors share a perspective that both memory and self are constructed through specific forms of social interactions and/or cultural frameworks that lead to the formation of an autobiographical narrative. Taken together, the chapters weave a coherent story about how each of us creates a life narrative embedded in social-cultural frameworks that define what is appropriate to remember, how to remember it, and what it means to be a self with an autobiographical past.

Book A View from the Lake

Download or read book A View from the Lake written by Mike Yurk and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-05-26 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AView From The Lake is much more then just a book of fishing stories. Yes there are plenty of fish stories but it just as much a book about people and places. There are memories of fishing with a grandfather and father, old and new friends and now a grandson. We travel to waters near and far. We venture to Cozumel for bonefish, Key West for tarpon, and to Canada for walleyes and northern pike. Closer to home we fish for bass and panfish, on the Mississippi River for walleyes, and an ice fishing trip to Lake Of The Woods. There are memories of an island and the adventure of camping there as a young boy, confidence in a favorite bait, the joys of Christmas vacation and the much anticipated arrival of the greatest fishing catalog of all time. The stories also relate the frustration with lawn work during fishing season, the importance of selecting a good fishing hat, and the beauty and memories associated with an old reel. There is a cabin in Minnesota loaded with colorful characters where just being there is more important then catching fish. There is a muskie fishing story from northern Wisconsin that actually begins in Innsbruck, Austria and another story of a mysterious trout stream in North Carolina. There are memories and laughter, lakes and streams and rivers, family and friends, and all the things that make fishing what it is.

Book Empire of Imagination

Download or read book Empire of Imagination written by Michael Witwer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life story of Gary Gygax, godfather of all fantasy adventure games, has been told only in bits and pieces. Michael Witwer has written a dynamic, dramatized biography of Gygax from his childhood in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin to his untimely death in 2008. Gygax's magnum opus, Dungeons & Dragons, would explode in popularity throughout the 1970s and '80s and irreversibly alter the world of gaming. D&D is the best-known, best-selling role-playing game of all time, and it boasts an elite class of alumni--Stephen Colbert, Robin Williams, and Junot Diaz all have spoken openly about their experience with the game as teenagers, and some credit it as the workshop where their nascent imaginations were fostered. Gygax's involvement in the industry lasted long after his dramatic and involuntary departure from D&D's parent company, TSR, and his footprint can be seen in the genre he is largely responsible for creating. But as Witwer shows, perhaps the most compelling facet of his life and work was his unwavering commitment to the power of creativity in the face of myriad sources of adversity, whether cultural, economic, or personal. Through his creation of the role-playing genre, Gygax gave two generations of gamers the tools to invent characters and entire worlds in their minds. Told in narrative-driven and dramatic fashion, Witwer has written an engaging chronicle of the life and legacy of this emperor of the imagination.
