Book History of White Whale Delphinapterus Leucas Exploitation in Eastern Hudson Bay and James Bay

Download or read book History of White Whale Delphinapterus Leucas Exploitation in Eastern Hudson Bay and James Bay written by Randall R. Reeves and published by Fisheries and Oceans, Information and Publications Branch. This book was released on 1987 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One objective of the present paper was to provide a more complete account of the catch history and to use all available data in making a new estimate of initial population size. A second objective relates to ongoing field work in the Eastmain region by other researchers. Census surveys, observations of behavior, and biological sampling might be accomplished and interpreted more efficiently if the following historical facts were known: (a) which river mouths were traditionally visited by white whales; (b) approximate dates of arrival at and departure from the river mouths by the whales; (c) routes followed and pattern of movement between rivers; (d) relative age- and sex-compositions of populations or parts of populations using the different river mouths; (e) year-to-year or within-year changes in "condition" of whales (e.g. gauged by their reported oil yield or by the qualitative comments of those who caught and flensed them); and (f) observations of social structure and behavior of whales, as observed and noted by early visitors to the Eastmain coast.

Book Reviews of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology

Download or read book Reviews of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology written by George W. Ware and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International concern in scientific, industrial, and governmental communi ties over traces of xenobiotics in foods and in both abiotic and biotic envi ronments has justified the present triumvirate of specialized publications in this field: comprehensive reviews, rapidly published research papers and progress reports, and archival documentations. These three international publications are integrated and scheduled to provide the coherency essential for nonduplicative and current progress in a field as dynamic and complex as environmental contamination and toxicology. This series is reserved ex clusively for the diversified literature on "toxic" chemicals in our food, our feeds, our homes, recreational and working surroundings, our domestic animals, our wildlife and ourselves. Tremendous efforts worldwide have been mobilized to evaluate the nature, presence, magnitude, fate, and toxi cology of the chemicals loosed upon the earth. Among the sequelae of this broad new emphasis is an undeniable need for an articulated set of authoritative publications, where one can find the latest important world literature produced by these emerging areas of science together with docu mentation of pertinent ancillary legislation. Research directors and legislative or administrative advisers do not have the time to scan the escalating number of technical publications that may contain articles important to current responsibility. Rather, these individu als need the background provided by detailed reviews and the assurance that the latest information is made available to them, all with minimal literature searching.

Book Marine Environmental Assessment of the Estuary and Gulf of St Lawrence

Download or read book Marine Environmental Assessment of the Estuary and Gulf of St Lawrence written by Louise White and published by Dartmouth, N.S. : Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Toxic Chemicals Program. This book was released on 1997 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This assessment is a summary of the accumulated scientific understanding of the estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence. It discusses the extent of anthropogenic modifications to this marine environment, points out principal uncertainties that hinder our understanding, and identifies important regional environmental issues. Many assessments attempt to provide easy-to-understand information to a wide, non-specialist audience. Others are directed more specifically to scientists, but include a conclusions section written for non-scientists. This document offers something of a middle approach: it is intended to be understood by a non-specialist audience, albeit one with a general knowledge of contemporary science. At the same time, it gives the professional scientist a broad-scale synthesis of current information.
