Book excerpt: "The City of Chandigarh puts us in touch with the infinite cosmos and nature. It provides us with places and buildings for all human activities by which the citizens can live a full and harmonious life. Here the radiance of nature and heart are within our reach." - Le Corbusier Upon India's independence, Jawaharlal Nehru, its first Prime Minister, dreamed of "a new town, an expression of the nation's faith in the future." The incarnation of Nehru's vision, the city of Chandigarh was the brainchild of renowned modernist architect Le Corbusier, born of his utopian dream of an avant-garde city, and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret, who oversaw production of thousands of objects that furnished it. Recently, record prices at auction for these pieces have brought awareness of this great project and its creators to a broader public. This catalogue raisonne sheds new light on this visionary urban project that is generating growing interest among design aficionados around the world. 400 illustrations

Book Frank Gehry The Masterpieces

Download or read book Frank Gehry The Masterpieces written by Jean-Louis Cohen and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative compendium on the main masterpieces of Frank Gehry, including 480 illustrations and photographs, produced in collaboration with Cahiers d’Art. Experimenting with a range of materials from cheap mass-produced items to space-age titanium, and using 3D computer modeling as an architectural tool, Frank Gehry’s buildings are remarkable and surprising, united by the sense of movement they convey. His projects flow, curve, bend, and crumple in novel and unexpected ways, subverting traditional building norms. From his own home in Santa Monica to the undulating Beekman Tower in New York, from the shining curves of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao to the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, and his most recent construction, Luma Arles, Gehry has left his indelible mark on the history of architectural design. Forty of the renowned architect’s most remarkable works are presented by architect and critic Jean-Louis Cohen, alongside views of the interiors and exteriors of each building. This tour includes many of Gehry’s works throughout the United States and abroad, such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the one-of-a-kind “Binoculars Building” in Los Angeles, and the beloved “Dancing House” in Prague.

Book Hilma Af Klint the Complete Catalogue Raisonn

Download or read book Hilma Af Klint the Complete Catalogue Raisonn written by Hilma af Klint and published by Bokforlaget Stolpe AB. This book was released on 2022-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hilma af Klint became known to a wider audience in 2013, nearly 70 years after her death, in conjunction with Moderna Museet's Stockholm exhibition Hilma af Klint: Abstract Pioneer. Six years later, her work was exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Both exhibitions saw record numbers of visitors, and today she is one of the world's most acclaimed artists. Hilma af Klint has become incredibly popular and beloved throughout the world, notes Daniel Birnbaum, co-editor with Kurt Almqvist. What makes her art interesting is that the works are highly interconnected. A catalogue raisonné is necessary in order to see the different cycles, motifs and symbols that recur in a fascinating way. If people want to truly understand how Hilma af Klint's works function, they need these books. The paintings in the catalogue raisonné are presented in the same order as Olof Sundström, also a follower of anthroposophy, numbered them in 1945, based on Hilma af Klint's notes. The forewords to the volumes are short and concise. They present facts about the works rather than interpretations. The works are printed in an exclusive edition designed by Patric Leo housed in a specially produced slipcase to hold all seven volumes. These books will be essential in all future research on Hilma af Klint's artistry --- Daniel Birnbaum. Today Hilma af Klint is recognised as one of the world's most esteemed artists - an unprecedented triumph. Hilma af Klint's time is now. Her art has become an important part of our Swedish cultural heritage. Few artists have been given the privilege of a catalogue raisonné. Thanks to Bokförlaget Stolpe's comprehensive work, we now have the opportunity to become acquainted with the entirety of Hilma af Klint's artistry. This would not have been possible without the support of the Axel and Margaret Ax:son Johnson Foundation for Public Benefit. As chairman of The Hilma af Klint Foundation, I would like to convey my warmest thanks. -- Ulrika af Klint, Chair, The Hilma af Klint Foundation.

Download or read book Annotated Catalogue Raisonn of the Books by Martin Kippenberger 1977 1997 written by Uwe Koch and published by Distributed Art Publishers (DAP). This book was released on 2003 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roberta Smith called him the "madcap bad boy of contemporary German art" and also "one of the three or four best German artists of the postwar period." Martin Kippenberger disrupted the status quo throughout his brief, excessive life, not just by making art of every variety and medium but also by conducting an extended performance in the vicinity of art that involved running galleries, organizing exhibitions, collecting the work of his contemporaries and overseeing assistants. He published books and catalogues, played in a rock-and-roll band and cut records, ran a performance-art space during his early years in Berlin, became part owner of a restaurant in Los Angeles during six months he spent there preparing for an exhibition, and collaborated extensively with other artists. This particular volume considers his output of artist's books, as well as his exhibition catalogues and all the publications whose content he either created or edited. More than just documentation, this publication makes accessible for a wider public the multiple aspects of Kippenberger's books, with all the complexity and consequence of his oeuvre intact.

Book excerpt: Over the past half-century, Gerhard Richter (born 1932) has built up a stylistically heterogeneous and conceptually complex body of painting, photography, sculpture and artist's books that firmly establishes his status as the most important living artist of our time: today, this diverse oeuvre totals in excess of 3,000 individual works. In February 2012, Hatje Cantz announced the first volume of their Gerhard Richter catalogue raisonne--the first of a projected five volumes, to be issued over the next seven years. Edited by Dietmar Elger, director of the Gerhard Richter Archive at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, who has spent years researching and preparing the publication, this third volume encompasses the works Richter assigned numbers 389-651/2, which span the years 1976 to 1988. Alongside nearly 700 full-color plates (many of them full-page), it includes full technical specifications, information about the artist's handwritten notes, and the provenance, bibliography and exhibition history for each individual work. This information is further supplemented by commentary, quotations from the artist and comparison images.
