Book excerpt: An examination of the development, role, and influence of the British decorative art dealers who invented an Anglo-Gallic style for elite interiors. In this volume Diana Davis demonstrates how London dealers invented a new and visually splendid decorative style that combined the contrasting tastes of two nations. Departing from the conventional narrative that depicts dealers as purveyors of antiquarianism, Davis repositions them as innovators who were key to transforming old art objects from ancien régime France into cherished “antiques” and, equally, as creators of new and modified French-inspired furniture, bronze work, and porcelain. The resulting old, new, and reconfigured objects merged aristocratic French eighteenth-century taste with nineteenth-century British preference, and they were prized by collectors, who displayed them side by side in palatial interiors of the period. The Tastemakers analyzes dealer-made furnishings from the nineteenth-century patron’s perspective and in the context of the interiors for which they were created, contending that early dealers deliberately formulated a new aesthetic with its own objects, language, and value. Davis examines a wide variety of documents to piece together the shadowy world of these dealers, who emerge center stage as a traders, makers, and tastemakers.

Book Pot lids and Other Coloured Printed Staffordshire Wares

Download or read book Pot lids and Other Coloured Printed Staffordshire Wares written by K. V. Mortimer and published by Antique Collectors Club Dist. This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the first book on the subject for over twenty years, classifies all known authenticated pot-lids by subject, lists their many variations and sizes, assesses their rarity and value and provides much new information on their history and contents. Errors and omissions in the earlier literature, many perpetuated through successive publications, have been corrected and the whole listing has been renumbered to avoid the anomalies caused by the absence of flexibility in the old system. Every lid has been measured so that all size categories can be accurately defined and rarity has been gauged as accurately as possible by an examination of nearly all auction catalogues from 1924 to 2002. For the first time virtually every item is featured in full colour. The section on ware has been simplified and clarified and many previously unrecorded items are published for the first time. The floral sections have been extensively revised and extended. This is the most comprehensive volume ever produced on this subject and should be the standard reference for years to come.

Book Byzantium in the Iconoclast Era ca 680 850 The Sources

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iconoclasm, the debate about the legitimacy of religious art that began in Byzantium around 730 and continued for nearly 120 years, has long held a firm grip on the historical imagination. Byzantium in the Iconoclast Era is the first book in English to survey the original sources crucial for a modern understanding of this most elusive and fascinating period in medieval history. It is also the first book in any language to cover both the written and the visual evidence from this period, a combination of particular importance to the iconoclasm debate. The authors, an art historian and a historian who both specialise in the period, have worked together to provide a comprehensive overview of the visual and the written materials that together help clarify the complex issues of iconoclasm in Byzantium.

Book excerpt: This book celebrates the work and career of the internationally renowned art historian, David Bindman, on the occasion of his 75th birthday, and is above all a tribute to him from his former students and colleagues. With essays on sculpture, drawings, watercolours and prints, the volume reflects the extraordinary range of Bindman's knowledge of works of art and his impact through his teaching and research on the understanding of British and European artistic developments from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. The essays cast light on questions of technique and stylistic change, patronage, collecting and iconography, and engage with issues such as the representation of race, gender, sexuality, political violence and propaganda, exile, and notions of the canon. The artists discussed here include Hogarth, Blake, Roubiliac, Thorvaldsen and Canova, all subjects of books by David Bindman, as well as Morland, Rowlandson, Gillray, Millais, Munch, Nevinson, and Heartfield.
