This book was released on 1996 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the 1920s, Kress and his foundation assembled, first in New York, and later in Washington, the nation's most inclusive collection of Italian art. In 1938 he decided to donate the collection to the National Gallery of Art, and when it opened in 1941, 375 paintings and 18 works of sculpture from the Kress gift were installed in the West Building. The Gallery's holdings of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Italian paintings have been enriched by gifts from P.A.B. Widener and Paul Mellon, and more recently from purchases. This catalogue is the first of four volumes to document the National Gallery's great collection of Italian paintings.

Download or read book Rustic Simplicity written by Christiana Payne and published by Ben Uri Gallery & Museum. This book was released on 1998 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the functions served by nineteenth-century rustic genre paintings in their social and intellectual context. It also deals with the issues raised by their contemporary popularity and subsequent neglect in the twentieth century. This collection fills a gap in the historical analysis of nineteenth-century art. Rustic genre painting encompasses a variety of themes: charity, education, family life and piety. The book examines the political topicality of many of the paintings and their relationship to the extension of suffrage, to campaigns to improve working-class housing and to the roles prescribed for women. The universal themes of these paintings have an immediate appeal to the viewer: their closest analogy in contemporary society is probably television soap opera, and their continuing popularity is shown by their use on greeting cards and stationery. This book reproduces over 100 illustrations by artists such as William Mulready, the Pre-Raphaelites and the Newlyn School, as well as examining the relatively neglected work of David Wilkie, William Collins, Thomas Webster, Thomas Faed and Alfred Fripp.
