Download or read book Catalogue of the Papers of Ernst Leumann in the Institute for the Culture and History of India and Tibet University of Hamburg written by and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 1998 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernst Leumann (1859-1931), professor in Strasbourg, was one of the most distinguished scholars of his time in Indology, especially renowned for his work in Jaina studies. The papers left by him fill roughly 550 notebooks. The majority of them contain still unpublished transcriptions of Jaina manuscripts which deal mainly with the Jaina narrative literature. A wealth of analytical material concerning Indian literature in general and various Indian languages is also to be found in Leumann's work. The present catalogue presents for the first time a complete list of the material, and is supplemented with notes as to the contents of the notebooks and with various indices. "A Bibliography of Studies Connected With the Avasyaka-Commentaries" by Klaus Bruhn has been added as an appendix. (Franz Steiner 1998)

Book Indic Manuscript Cultures through the Ages

Download or read book Indic Manuscript Cultures through the Ages written by Vincenzo Vergiani and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays explores the history of the book in pre-modern South Asia looking at the production, circulation, fruition and preservation of manuscripts in different areas and across time. Edited by the team of the Cambridge-based Sanskrit Manuscripts Project and including contributions of the researchers who collaborated with it, it covers a wide range of topics related to South Asian manuscript culture: from the material dimension (palaeography, layout, decoration) and the complicated interactions of manuscripts with printing in late medieval Tibet and in modern Tamil Nadu, to reading, writing, editing and educational practices, from manuscripts as sources for the study of religious, literary and intellectual traditions, to the creation of collections in medieval India and Cambodia (one major centre of the so-called Sanskrit cosmopolis), and the formation of the Cambridge collections in the colonial period. The contributions reflect the variety of idioms, literary genres, religious movements, and social actors (intellectuals, scribes, patrons) of ancient South Asia, as well as the variety of approaches, interests and specialisms of the authors, and their impassionate engagement with manuscripts.

Book Jaina Scriptures and Philosophy

Download or read book Jaina Scriptures and Philosophy written by Peter Flügel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in Indian religion and comparative philosophy has increased in recent years, but despite this the study of Jaina philosophy is still in its infancy. This book looks at the role of philosophy in Jaina tradition, and its significance within the general developments in Indian philosophy. Bringing together chapters by philologists, historians and philosophers, the book focuses on karman theory, the theory of conditional predication, epistemology and the debates of Jaina philosophers with representatives of competing traditions, such as Ājīvika, Buddhist and Hindu. It analyses the relationship between religion and philosophy in Jaina scriptures, both Digambara and Śvetāmbara, and will be of interest to scholars and students of South Asian Religion, Philosophy, and Philology.

Book Historical Dictionary of Jainism

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Jainism written by Kristi L. Wiley and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Isaac Newton died in 1727 without a will, he left behind a wealth of papers that, when examined, gave his followers and his family a deep sense of unease. Some of what they contained was wildly heretical and alchemically obsessed, hinting at a Newton altogether stranger and less palatable than the one enshrined in Westminster Abbey as the paragon of English rationality. These manuscripts had the potential to undermine not merely Newton's reputation, but that of the scientific method he embodied. They were immediately suppressed as "unfit to be printed," and, aside from brief, troubling glimpses spread across centuries, the papers would remain hidden from sight for more than seven generations. In The Newton Papers, Sarah Dry illuminates the tangled history of these private writings over the course of nearly three hundred years, from the long span of Newton's own life into the present day. The writings, on subjects ranging from secret alchemical formulas to impassioned rejections of the Holy Trinity, would eventually come to light as they moved through the hands of relatives, collectors, and scholars. The story of their disappearance, dispersal, and rediscovery is populated by a diverse cast of characters who pursued and possessed the papers, from economist John Maynard Keynes to controversial Jewish Biblical scholar Abraham Yahuda. Dry's captivating narrative moves between these varied personalities, depicting how, as they chased the image of Newton through the thickets of his various obsessions, these men became obsessed themselves with the allure of defining the "true" Newton. Dry skillfully accounts for the ways with which Newton's pursuers have approached his papers over centuries. Ultimately, The Newton Papers shows how Newton has been made and re-made throughout history by those seeking to reconcile the cosmic contradictions of an extraordinarily complex man.

Book Jaina Epistemology in Historical and Comparative Perspective

Download or read book Jaina Epistemology in Historical and Comparative Perspective written by Piotr Balcerowicz and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2001 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nyayavatara, erroneously ascribed by tradition to Siddhasena Divakara, was either the first or one of the first serious Jaina treatises on epistemology. Its author enters polemics with other - mostly Buddhist - epistemological schools and endeavours to establish a Jaina epistemological tradition of its own. Despite its importance, the work is rather secondary in the sense that it relies, for the most part, on the Buddhist logical legacy. The first extant commentary is the Nyayavatara-vivrti of Siddharsigani. Its significance is often underestimated, for its author was responsible for the subsequent development of Jaina epistemological thought to a much larger degree than it has so far been recognised. He refers to major philosophical schools of his times, e.g. to Sautrantika, Yogacara, Sunya-vada, Samkhya, Mimamsa, Nyaya, Vaisesika, Advaita-vedanta, the materialists, etc. The gloss (Tippana) of Devabhadra is in addition a useful source of quotations. Book Kailas Histories

  • Pages : 550 pages

Download or read book Kailas Histories written by Alex McKay and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tibet’s Mount Kailas is one of the world’s great pilgrimage centres, renowned as an ancient sacred site that embodies a universal sacrality. But Kailas Histories: Renunciate Traditions and the Construction of Himalayan Sacred Geography demonstrates that this understanding is a recent construction by British colonial, Hindu modernist, and New Age interests. Using multiple sources, including fieldwork, Alex McKay describes how the early Indic vision of a heavenly mountain named Kailas became identified with actual mountains. He emphasises renunciate agency in demonstrating how local beliefs were subsumed as Kailas developed within Hindu, Buddhist, and Bön traditions, how five mountains in the Indian Himalayan are also named Kailas, and how Kailas sacred geography constructions and a sacred Ganges source region were related.
