Book Catalogue of Irish Manuscripts in Houghton Library Harvard University

Download or read book Catalogue of Irish Manuscripts in Houghton Library Harvard University written by Cornelius G. Buttimer and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2022-01-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full account of North America’s largest collection of traditional Irish-language manuscripts. Harvard University has the largest collection of Irish-language codices in North America, held in Houghton Library, its rare book repository. The manuscripts are a part of the age-old heritage of Irish book production, dating to the early Middle Ages. Handwritten works in Houghton contain versions of medieval poetry and sagas, recopied in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, to which period most of the library’s documents belong. Contemporary writings from that time, as well as ones by the post-Famine Irish immigrant community in the United States, are included. This catalogue describes the collection in full for the first time and will be an invaluable aid to research on Irish and Irish American cultural and literary output. The author’s introduction examines how the collection was formed. This untold story is an important chapter in America’s intellectual history, reflecting a phase of unprecedented expansion in Harvard University’s scholarship and teaching during the early twentieth century when the institution’s program of studies began to accommodate an increasing range of European languages and literatures and their sources. This indispensable guide to a major repository’s records of the Irish past, and of America’s Irish diaspora, will interest specialists in early and post-medieval codices. It should prove of relevance as well to scholars and students of comparative literature, cultural studies, and Irish and Irish American history.

Book Trinity College Library Dublin

Download or read book Trinity College Library Dublin written by Peter Fox and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive, scholarly history of Trinity College Library Dublin. It covers the whole 400 years of the Library's development, from its foundation by James Ussher in the seventeenth century to the electronic revolution of the twenty-first century. Particular attention is given to the buildings and to the politics involved in obtaining funding for them, as well as to the acquisition of the great treasures, such as the Book of Kells and the libraries of Ussher, Claudius Gilbert and Hendrik Fagel. An important aspect is the comprehensive coverage of legal deposit from the beginning of the nineteenth century, viewed for the first time from the Irish perspective. The book also draws parallels with the development of other libraries in Dublin and with those of the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and features throughout the individuals who influenced the Library's development - librarians, politicians, readers, book collectors and book thieves.

Book Latin Psalter Manuscripts in Trinity College Dublin and the Chester Beatty Library

Download or read book Latin Psalter Manuscripts in Trinity College Dublin and the Chester Beatty Library written by Laura Cleaver and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Psalms was at the core of devotional practice in western Christianity throughout the Middle Ages. The study of medieval Latin Psalters provides evidence for the owners, users, and makers of each of these unique books. This volume examines Psalter manuscripts as objects, exploring how they were designed and the changes that have been made to them over time. The choices made about text, decoration, size, and layout in these manuscripts reveal a diverse range of engagements with the Psalms, as they were sung, read, and scrutinized. The book thus sheds new light on some of the treasures of Trinity College Dublin and the Chester Beatty Library. *** Slim in format and heavy in insights, this book is a peculiar hybrid. It is not a robust academic catalogue or a glossy exhibition catalogue or a coffee-table book, but it manages to combine some of the most appealing features of all three. Elegantly designed and richly illustrated in (almost) full colour, it is a pleasure to hold, look at and leaf through. ...a publication that invites an intimate study of Dublin's treasures.Ã?Â?Ã?Â?-- Stella Panayotova, Times Literary Supplement, February 2016 [Subject: History, Irish Studies, Medieval Studies, Religious Studies]

The testimonies document the loss of goods, military activity, and the alleged crimes committed by the Irish insurgents. This body of material is unparalleled anywhere in early modern Europe. It provides a unique source of information for the causes and events surrounding the 1641 rebellion and for the social, economic, cultural, religious, and political history of seventeenth- century Ireland, England and Scotland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Irish Manuscripts in the Library of Trinity College, Dublin The history of our Library from the foundation of the College has been sketched in outline by Dr. I. K. Ingram, in his Address to the Congress of Librarians, and by Dr. T. K. Abbott, in the Book of Trinity College, and again in the preface to his General Catalogue of our Mss. Both have given some interesting parti culars as to the history of our collection of manuscripts, but we have as yet no detailed study of its origin and growth. It may be worth while to put together here in a few pages what can be learned as to the provenance of our Irish mss., with which alone this volume is concerned. I shall confine myself to inquiring when and how they came into our Library; what is known as to the earlier history ofeach manuscript will be found in the description of each under its number, or in the literature there quoted. Until quite recently no continuous official record was kept of acquisitions by gift or purchase. We possess indeed several volumes oflibrary Minutes, extending from 1786 onward, the earlier part of which, down to 1821, we owe mainly to the eccentric but industrious Dr. John Barrett, who was Librarian during most of that period. I have searched these Minutes carefully and gleaned some stray details, but they are mainly occupied with Library routine.' Our main source of information is the series of Catalogues of mss.
