Seminary in Andover, Mass Dr. Robinson on his return and election to the oflice of Prof. Extra ordinary and Librarian, in 1830, as a part of his duties, commenced a new and full Catalogue, and labored upon it constantly for between four and five months. When, on account of ill health and other causes, he, in 1833, resigned his situation, the fruit of his labor was left behind him in manuscript. This last, though made out with all the thoroughness and minute accuracy for which this gentleman is remarkable, had been written in a very fine hand, for his own eye, and was left uncopied. Such, with a few additions made by different persons, were the materi als which I found for the present work, on being invited some time since by the Trustees, to engage in the undertaking. Every thing else was to be done, the original investigations and entrances to be completed, and the whole to be arranged, harmonized, recopied, verified, printed, etc. I have been over the entire ground, and with few exceptions, trust ed nothing even to the accuracy of my learned predecessors. My ob ject under the countenance of those who employed me, has been to ex bibit a full and perfect alphabetical description of every thing the library contains. While, therefore, I availed myself of their labors and general guidance, it was necessary for me, however tedious the process, to see and do every thing for myself. Islam was not only the focus of Christian missions, but was studied as part of the history of the Church as well as in the new field of comparative religions. Moreover, Arabic was taught as a cognate biblical language to help students better understand biblical Hebrew. Passages from the Qur’an were sometimes read as part of language instruction. Christian seminaries were themselves new institutions in the nineteenth century. Though Islam had already been present in the Americas since the beginning of the slave trade, it was only in the nineteenth century that the American public became more aware of Islam and had increasing contact with Muslims. It was during this period that extensive trade with the Ottoman empire emerged and more feasible travel opportunities to the Middle East became available due to the development of the steamship. Providing an in-depth look at the information about Islam that was available in seminaries throughout the nineteenth century, Muhammad in the Seminary examines what Protestant seminaries were teaching about this tradition in the formative years of pastoral education. Conceptually, leaders followed classical and German rhetoricians in viewing rhetoric as an art of ethical choice. The Old Faith in a New Nation challenges this portrayal by recovering evangelical engagement with the Christian past. Even when they appeared to be most scornful toward tradition, most optimistic and forward-looking, and most confident in their grasp of the Bible, evangelicals found themselves returning, time and again, to Christian history. They studied religious historiography, reinterpreted the history of the church, and argued over its implications for the present. Between the Revolution and the Civil War, American Protestants were deeply interested in the meaning of the Christian past. Paul J. Gutacker draws from hundreds of print sources-sermons, books, speeches, legal arguments, political petitions, and more-to show how ordinary educated Americans remembered and used Christian history. While claiming to rely on the Bible alone, antebellum Protestants frequently turned to the Christian past on questions of import: how should the government relate to religion? Could Catholic immigrants become true Americans? What opportunities and rights should be available to women? To African Americans?
