Book An Illustrated and Descriptive Catalogue of Rare Old Persian Pottery

Download or read book An Illustrated and Descriptive Catalogue of Rare Old Persian Pottery written by H. O. Watson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Illustrated and Descriptive Catalogue of Rare Old Persian Pottery: With Historical and Other Notes Pertaining to a Private Collection That the Persian potters tried to make porcelain is sufficiently shown by their close imitations, in fine earthenware, of the design and colours appearing on Chinese models which they possessed at the time. There is, on the other hand, no true porcelain, as we know it to-day, to be found among the older products of Persian manufacture, unless (and for want of a better name) the white semi-translucent ware some what resembling the transparent porcelain of China may be so described. It has been called faience trans lucide, and also porcelains blanche dc Persc, which terms by French authorities might be accepted as properly covering the subject, although the paste of even the finest examples from Persia, on examination of the foot or of a fracture, will show them to be essentially earthen, therefore unlike in resemblance to the hard and pure white texture to be noted on foot or fracture of true kaolinic vitrified porcelain. Book Persian Pottery in the First Global Age

Download or read book Persian Pottery in the First Global Age written by Lisa Golombek and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-12-09 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persian Pottery in the First Global Age: the Sixteenth and Seventeeth Centuries studies the ceramic industry of Iran in the Safavid period (1501–1732) and the impact which the influx of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, heightened by the activities of the English and Dutch East Indies Companies after c. 1700, had on local production. The multidisciplinary approach of the authors (Lisa Golombek, Robert B. Mason, Patricia Proctor, Eileen Reilly) leads to a reconstruction of the narrative about Safavid pottery and revises commonly accepted notions. The book includes easily accessible reference charts to assist in dating and provenancing Safavid pottery on the basis of diagnostic motifs, potters’ marks, petrofabrics, shapes, and Chinese models.

Book Sasanian and Islamic Settlement and Ceramics in Southern Iran 4th to 17th Century AD

Download or read book Sasanian and Islamic Settlement and Ceramics in Southern Iran 4th to 17th Century AD written by Seth M. N. Priestman and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph comprises the final publication of a study supported by the British Institute of Persian Studies and undertaken by Seth Priestman and Derek Kennet at the University of Durham. The work presents and analyses an assemblage of just under 17,000 sherds of pottery and associated paper archives resulting from one of the largest and most comprehensive surveys ever undertaken on the historic archaeology of southern Iran. The survey was undertaken by Andrew George Williamson (1945–1975), a doctoral student at Oxford University between 1968 and 1971, at a time of great progress and rapid advance in the archaeological exploration of Iran. The monograph provides new archaeological evidence on the long-term development of settlement in Southern Iran, in particular the coastal region, from the Sasanian period to around the 17th century. The work provides new insights into regional settlement patterns and changing ceramic distribution, trade and use. A large amount of primary data is presented covering an extensive area from Minab to Bushehr along the coast and inland as far as Sirjan. This includes information on a number of previously undocumented archaeological sites, as well as a detailed description and analysis of the ceramic finds, which underpin the settlement evidence and provide a wider source of reference. By collecting carefully controlled archaeological evidence related to the size, distribution and period of occupation of urban and rural settlements distributed across southern Iran, Williamson aimed to reconstruct the broader historical development of the region. Due to his early death the work was never completed. The key aims of the authors of this volume were to do justice to Williamson’s remarkable vision and efforts on the one hand, and at the same time to bring this important new evidence to ongoing discussions about the development of southern Iran through the Sasanian and Islamic periods.

Book Persian Ceramics

Download or read book Persian Ceramics written by Giovanni Curatola and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the complex and varied world of Islamic art ceramics play an important role. Medieval Persian ceramics, in particular, were extraordinary for their technical invention and imaginative, refined iconography achieving artistic results that would be difficult to surpass in the art of pottery. Compared with early Islamic art, works of art from medieval times make much greater use of figural decoration and forms. Alongside celebrated examples from some of the world's most prestigious museum collections, this volume includes a series of hitherto unseen works. The impressive and technically sophisticated pieces include plates, bowls, ewers, jugs, jars, beakers, and spouted and shaped vessels. The book provides an exhaustive panorama of Persian ceramics, striking a perfect balance between technical, stylistic, and aesthetic analysis, which brings the reader closer to this art of exceptional quality and beauty.
