Book Roads in the Deserts of Roman Egypt

Download or read book Roads in the Deserts of Roman Egypt written by Maciej Paprocki and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egypt under the Romans (30 BCE–3rd century CE) was a period when local deserts experienced an unprecedented flurry of activity. In the Eastern Desert, a marked increase in desert traffic came from imperial prospecting/quarrying activities and caravans transporting wares to and from the Red Sea ports. In the Western Desert, resilient camels slowly became primary beasts of burden in desert travel, enabling caravaneers to lengthen daily marching distances across previously inhospitable dunes. Desert road archaeology has used satellite imaging, landscape studies and network analysis to plot desert trail networks with greater accuracy; however, it is often difficult to date roadside installations and thus assess how these networks evolved in scope and density in reaction to climatic, social and technological change. Roads in the Deserts of Roman Egypt examines evidence for desert roads in Roman Egypt and assesses Roman influence on the road density in two select desert areas: the central and southern section of the Eastern Desert and the central Marmarican Plateau and discusses geographical and social factors influencing road use in the period, demonstrating that Roman overseers of these lands adapted remarkably well to local desert conditions, improving roads and developing the trail network. Crucially, the author reconceptualises desert trails as linear corridor structures that follow expedient routes in the desert landscape, passing through at least two functional nodes attracting human traffic, be those water sources, farmlands, mines/quarries, trade hubs, military installations or actual settlements. The ‘route of least resistance’ across the desert varied from period to period according to the available road infrastructure and beasts of burden employed. Roman administration in Egypt not only increased the density of local desert ‘node’ networks, but also facilitated internodal connections with camel caravans and transformed the Sahara by establishing new, or embellishing existing, nodes, effectively funnelling desert traffic into discernible corridors.Significantly, not all desert areas of Egypt are equally suited for anthropogenic development, but almost all have been optimised in one way or another, with road installations built for added comfort and safety of travellers. Accordingly, the study of how Romans successfully adapted to desert travel is of wider significance to the study of deserts and ongoing expansion due to global warming.

This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Greek Papyri in the John Rylands Library, Manchester, Vol. 1: Literary d104s (Nos; 1-61) The non-literary section of the Rylands papyri, which is naturally much more extensive, will occupy at least two volumes, of which the first is already in hand and will, it is hoped, be issued early in 1912. A chronological arrangement will be adopted, and the next Part of this Catalogue will accordingly contain documents of the Ptolemaic and Roman epochs, those of the Byzantine period being reserved until later. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Greek Papyri in the John Rylands Library, Manchester, Vol. 2: Documents of the Ptolemaic and Roman Periods (Nos. 62-456) For the preparation Of this. Volume, which is devoted to the Rylands papyri Of the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, a longer time has been found necessary than was anticipated when its predecessor was published in 1911. Several causes have contributed to this delay. The work has grown considerably under our hands, owing' partly to the incorporation of fresh texts, partly to the desirability of dealing at length with certain problems which arose during the course Of our investigations. Moreover, there have been repeated and protracted interruptions caused by other claims upon our time. We hope, however, that loss Of speed has been compensated in other directions, and that the lengthy period Of incubation has resulted in an increase of both accuracy and fullness. Book Checklist of Editions of Greek Latin Demotic and Coptic Papyri Ostraca and Tablets

Download or read book Checklist of Editions of Greek Latin Demotic and Coptic Papyri Ostraca and Tablets written by John F. Oates and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of the Checklist is to provide for scholars and librarians a ready bibliography of all monographic volumes, both current and out-of-print, of Greek, Latin, Demotic, and Coptic texts on papyrus, parchment, ostraca, or wood tablets. A secondary purpose of the original checklist (first published in 1974) was to establish a standard list of abbreviations for editions of Greek texts. Now this has been largely achieved, this edition aims to expand standardized abbreviations to cover Coptic and Demotic material. In general, this volume offers more complete coverage of Demotic material than ever attempted before; it is especially valuable since this is a growing area of study that lacks bibliographic resources and standard notations.
