The work consists of two parts. In the first part the historical environment in which this Purāṇa was composed is described. The second part explores six localities in Northern India that play a prominent role in the text. It is richly illustrated and contains a detailed bibliography and index.

Book An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology

Download or read book An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology written by Amalananda Ghosh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1990 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology" is a significant reference work on archaeology in India. It is an authoritative work of permanent value in which the knowledge and expertise of Indian archaeologists from the Archaeological Survey of India, universities and other institutes have been pooled together under the editorship of the late A. Ghosh, former Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India. The "Encyclopaedia" has been planned in an ambitious manner; it is not merely an alphabetical listing of entries with sketchy information on topics. Volume 1, which deals with certain broad subjects relating to Indian Archaeology, is divided into twenty chapters, alphabetically arranged. Each chapter is further divided into sections and subsections containing independent and self-contained essays. For example, in the chapter on "Cultures," detailed information can be found on various cultures in India; the chapter on "Basis of dating" contains articles on archaeological dating, archaeomagnetic dating, 14C radio-carbon dating, numismatic dating, palaeographic and epigraphic dating, thermoluminescent dating, etc. For those interested in getting further information on the subjects and in looking into the original sources and references, each entry also carries an exhaustive bibliography. Volume II is the Gazetteer. It contains basic data and information on all the explored and excavated sites in India along with reference to published reports and/or notices on each.

Book Buddhist Monks and Monasteries of India

Download or read book Buddhist Monks and Monasteries of India written by Sukumar Dutt and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishe. This book was released on 1988 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though India is no longer a Buddhist country, Buddhism held its place among Indian faiths for nearly seventeen centuries (500 B.C.--A.D. 1200). During this long stretch of time the Buddhist monks were organized in Sanghas in most parts of the country and their activities and achievements have profoundly influenced India`s traditional culture. There are monumental remains of Buddhist monastic life scattered all over India: in the south there are about a thousand cave-monasteries, among them Ajanta, world-famous for its exquisite mural paintings; in the north, less spectacular, the ruins of monastic edifices from Taxila in the west to Paharpur in the east. A connected history of the Buddhist monks of ancient India, their activities, their monastic establishments and their contributions to Indian culture, is available for the first time in this work, which is remarkable also for its pervading human interest. In reconstructing the history of the emperors and kings who were patrons of Buddhism, the early missionaries and the illustrious monk-scholars of later times, the author has used sources in four languages--Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese and Tibetan. Contents The primitive sangha, The asoka-satavahana age 250 BC-AD 100 and its legacy, In the Gupta age (AD 300-550) and after, Eminent monk-Scholars of India, Monastic Universities, (AD 500-1200), Bib., Index.

Book Indian Epigraphical Glossary

Download or read book Indian Epigraphical Glossary written by Dineschandra Sircar and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1966 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interested world of scholars is sure to receive with gratitude this latest work from the erudite pen of Prof. D.C. Sircar who has opened up for us new vistas in the study of Indian antiquities. Prof. Sircar`s Indian Epigraphical Glossary, characterised by a wide sweep of vision based on a meticulous attention to details, is a contribution of the utmost importance. Here one finds an embarras de richesses in a comprehensive dictionary of technical expressioins found in documents embracing nearly 2000 years in time and the entire Indian sub-continent in space and written in a variety of languages. It offers a panorama of Indian political and cultural life as enshrined in a series of expressions which are precise and historically important. Many of them remained obscure, and Prof. Sircar, with his thorough knowledge of the subject in the study of which he has spent a life-time, has succeeded in most cases in giving quite satisfactory interpretations. The mass of material in this invaluable publication, which will continue to be an indispensable work of reference for many years to come, brings in a volume of lexical material for the compilation of an exhaustive Dictionary of Sanskrit. The importance of the work, which I would consider epoch-making in the domain of Indology, has been considerably enhanced by three remarkable Appendices.
