The Library catalogues itself. Its primary classification is under Schools - British, including American Danish, Dutch, Flemish, French, German (under which for convenience and for the present are grouped Austrian, Hungarian and German Swiss), Greek (modern), Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. For the use of those who are uncertain as to the School or date of any painter, and to indicate the names of the artists whose works are represented in the Library, the alphabetical Catalogue of painters following this Note has been prepared, giving in every case where known the full name, dates and School. Under their respective Schools all the painters represented in the Library are arranged alphabetically. Where a man is known under several names, the more usual nomenclature has been followed, and cross-references to alternative names will be found in the Catalogue. In cases where the School itself is doubtful or disputable the choice has always been based upon authority. The numerous cases of erroneous or doubtful attributions have been met by placing the reproduction under the name officially given to it so that it can always be traced, but adding duplicate reproductions and cross references under the correct or alternative names.
