Book Catalogue of Pictures and Historical Relics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Catalogue of Pictures and Historical Relics Classic Reprint written by W. Wheeler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Pictures and Historical Relics Renowned as is the Exhibition of Madame Tussaud and Sons for its unique collection of Portrait Models, it is not less remarkable for its historical relics and its artistic treasures, the gradual accumulation of more than a century. Under the latter head it is particularly rich in works by French masters of the revolutionary and post-revolutionary periods. English masters, indeed, are not unrepresented; and there are, among older masters of various schools, examples of Rubens and Sir Peter Lely. But it is by its specimens of French painters that the Exhibition, in an artistic sense, makes its strongest claim to consideration. It possesses quite a series of portraits by David, the great master of the Revolution and the First Empire, to whom, though his work may have suffered from a too rigid adherence to the canons of classicism, both History and Art are nevertheless under deep obligation for his striking presentments of so many of his great contemporaries. Most of the portraits ill the Napoleon room are from the pencil of this enthusiast, who, happily for posterity, found no difficulty in transferring his idolatry from a Robespierre to a Bonaparte. To the engraver's art, again, justice is done by many fine pictures of events in the career of Napoleon. As to sculpture, it is enough to name the great Thorwaldsen, whose magnificent bust of the Man of Destiny is one of the choicest treasures of the Exhibition. Of the Historical Relics, one may say that on this side, too, the Exhibition is specially rich in mementoes of Napoleon and of that revolutionary whirlwind which he put into leash, and upon which he rode to supreme power. Voltaire, whose deadly attacks upon established formulas prepared the way for the overthrow of an effete regime, and Robespierre, who reaped where the great master of mockery had sown, are both represented by characteristic belongings of theirs, the one by a combination armchair and reading-desk, the other by lethal weapons. Of the Bastille also there are several relics. But the most impressive memorial of the great upheaval is the original guillotine, the instrument of death first to the royalists, then to successive factions of the revolutionaries themselves. Not until its abhorred blade had cut the threads of twenty thousand lives was this gruesome machine superseded. The chief glory of the collection, however, is the Napoleon relics. Others, again, gifted with equally fine taste, such as Sir Robert Peel, the English Rothschilds, Mr. Thomas Baring, Mr. Gambier Parry, Mr. Ruskin and Mr. Holford, were forming collections for themselves, taking advantage of the opportunities afforded during the first half of the nineteenth century by the Napoleonic Wars and the Revolutionary vicissitudes of 1848. All agreed in wanting a common meeting-place to compare their treasures. This difficulty was solved by the formation of the Club. Permission was Obtained, through Sir Henry Cole, then Secretary of the Science and Art Department, from Lord Granville, Lord President of the Council, with the approval of Mr. Gladstone, for evening receptions at Marlborough House where the Science and Art Department was domiciled from 1852 to 1857. Book The Stowe Catalogue Priced and Annotated Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Stowe Catalogue Priced and Annotated Classic Reprint written by Henry Rumsey Forster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stowe Catalogue, Priced and Annotated The avidity with which catalogues of sales by auction of collections vastly inferior in interest and importance to that of Srows have, from time to time, been sought for by persons of taste, has suggested the publication of the following pages. The object of the Editor has been to furnish a volume of somewhat deeper interest than a mere priced catalogue; and with this view he has endeavoured, so far as patient and diligent research might enable him so to do, to put upon record such facts as seemed calculated to illustrate the origin, history, merits, and intrinsic value of the subjects calling for particular remark at his bands. In his comments upon the characteristic traits of the articles specially referred to, the Editor has studied to observe a rigid impartiality; and if, occasionally, his judgment may be found at variance with that of their possessors, it must be home in mind that he lays no claim to infallibility for his opinions. His desire has been to provide a trustworthy manual for the amateur and man of taste, to assist him not only in ascertaining the existing value of objects of art [and vertu, but in tracing to their new owners those that have lately been dispersed. It is only by a careful perusal of priced catalogues of the sales of collections of works of this description, that the amateur, who has not leisure to attend and purchase for himself, can arrive at a proximate acquaintance with the cost at which it is possible to obtain them. The bookseller, the picture-dealer, and the connoisseur, must all graduate in this branch of bibliography, if they would correctly inform themselves of the value of the objects in which they are respectively interested. The catalogues of the collections of Mr. Heber, Sir Mark M. Sykes, Horace Walpole, Mr. Beckford, and many other distinguished amateurs, are now rarely to be obtained, and never except at prices enormously beyond their original cost; whilst copies annotated with the pen are only to be purchased at a sacrifice which few virtuosi will in these days care to incur.
