Maynard, Esq., Boston, Mass: Now on Exhibition at the Leavitt Art Galleries, 817 Broadway Mr. Maynard was a well-known and highly esteemed art collector, whose taste and whose success in selecting good specimens of famous artists was proverbial. His kindness of heart and liberality of disposition made him the friend and patron of struggling artists in this country. Wherever he saw evidences of genius, he was prompt to acknowledge it, and assist them by liberal commissions. He was ever foremost in the recognition of talent among foreign artists also, and in his collection are admirable specimens of many men who have, since he purchased their pictures, acquired great distinction. Among these are examples of Zamacois, of Ruiperez, of Lambinet, of Schreyer, of Brion, besides excellent specimens of Diaz. Corot, Troyon, Daubigny, and others whose reputations were at the highest at the time of Mr. Maynard's pur chases. This gentleman was also a steady friend and admirer of George Inness, of whom the collection con tains some very notable works. The collection is, in a word, a gratifying instance of sound artistic taste and ap preciation on the part of a very accomplished gentleman. Not being able to make or see art would be a major deprivation." The Virginia native's creative path began early, and, during the course of her life, she overcame significant barriers in her quest to make and even see art, including serious vision problems, polio, and paralysis. And then there was her gender. In 1957 Blaine was hailed by Life magazine as someone to watch, profiled alongside four other emerging painters whom the journalist praised "not as notable women artists but as notable artists who happen to be women." In Central to Their Lives, twenty-six noted art historians offer scholarly insight into the achievements of female artists working in and inspired by the American South.
