Visitors are not allowed to touch any picture or object exhibited, or to go within the railings placed before the pictures, furniture, and works of art. 2. Visitors are not allowed to take umbrellas or parcels into the Gallery; or to carry sticks, except in cases of infirmity recognised by the Attendants. Sticks, umbrellas, and parasols must be left with the Attendants in the Hall. The same Regulation extends to all articles which might be used to point at pictures. 3. Visitors are not allowed to consume refreshments in the Galleries, or to bring in provisions or bottles of any kind. No paper or refuse is to be thrown about. Smoking is absolutely forbidden in the building. 4. In case of noise, indecorous behaviour, or other misconduct on the part of any visitor, the Attendants are instructed to call in the assistance of the Police. Any person transgressing the Regulations will be liable to immediate expulsion. 5. Children under the age of 8 shall not be admitted under any circumstances. Children over the age of 8 and under the age of 12 shall be admitted only when in charge of responsible adults. No person shall be admitted in a state of intoxication. They are Winslow Homer and John Sargent. The first of these men was born in Boston and was almost entirely self taught. He became a lithographer and then Harpers' corre spondent at the front during the early years of the Civil War. From this he developed into the foremost American marine painter. Later he took up the more summary medium of water color, working broadly for effects of light and color. John Sargent was born of American parents in Florence, received his first training in the Academy there, and later was a student under Carolus Duran. From this training he emerged a most facile portrait painter, being considered by eminent authorities the first portraitist since-reyno'ds and Gainsb.orough After he had acquired fame and fortune in this branch of oil painting, he gave it up for water color, with the interesting results here shown. This exhibition is especially remarkable because it brings to us unfamiliar work by familiar masters. All lovers of art are well acquainted with oil paintings by both artists but many of them have never had such an excellent opportunity to view and study their work in another medium.
