Book Descriptive Catalogue of the Casts From Greek and Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Descriptive Catalogue of the Casts From Greek and Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint written by Edward Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Catalogue of the Casts From Greek and Roman Sculpture Since the publication of the former catalogue, the col lection of casts has increased to such an extent that the Trustees of the Museum have found the continued issue of supplements impracticable, and have therefore ordered the preparation of a new catalogue. Advantage has been taken of this Opportunity to offer what it is hoped may be both a guide for general visitors, and a useful handbook for students, for whom especially the notes following the title of each object are intended. The statements regard ing restorations are based upon those of archaeologists who have made especial studies of the respective objects, com pared with photographs and with the author's notes. No attempt has been made to give the complete literature of each object, as this would have increased the size of the catalogue unnecessarily. The references are generally either to the best illustrations of the work described, or to one or two of the most important essays upon it, and are given partly as an assistance in identifying the casts with their originals, and partly for the benefit of those who may wish an exhaustive description of some particular work. In general histories and manuals of ancient sculpture stu dents can easily find the allusions to the objects of which casts are here exhibited. A list of the more important of these histories is given below. With few exceptions, the Greek names of deities and heroes are given, in preference to their Roman synonymes. For the convenience of those familiar only with the latter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint written by Edmund Von Mach and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-09 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture Part Ten - Portraits - is the least complete part of the collection, especially as regards Roman portraits. This had to be so, because the number of extant Roman por traits is so large that even a fair selection from them would have been out of proportion to the other parts of the book. No attempt, therefore, has been made to give portraits of all men of note. The aim rather has been to select statues and busts which illustrate the develop ment of portrait-sculpture, irrespective of the persons portrayed. In Part Eleven - Heads the specialist may miss some favorite specimens, but here again the material from which to draw is so large that a rigid sifting process became necessary. The principle followed was similar to that adopted for Part Ten. Heads were included in the list when they illustrated the development of sculpture, and often excluded, although with considerable regret, when their chief claim to attention was based on their pleasing appearance. Book Greek Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Greek Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint written by A. Furtwängler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Roman Sculpture This convenient small edition of the M onurnents of Greek and Roman Sculpture just published in folio form appears in accordance with the wishes of a large number of professors and teachers of higher education in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It should enable both teacher and student to form an idea of the contents of the large work. The explanations and descriptions have been revised and improved by the authors, and translations of all the quota tions in foreign languages have been added. The text is divided into ten groups arranged from an historical point of view and in regard to subject. Each of these groups is preceded by a new collective sketch which aims at a com prehensive View of the various examples from a broad and generalised standpoint. But at the same time the work still preserves its character as a collection of monuments and does not pretend to take the place of a complete history of the subject. These short article's are merely intended to give to each example its proper position in relation to the development Of antique art. As all the principal periods are here presented the text Of the groups constitutes a survey of the whole development of Greek and Roman sculpture. Quotations from modern authors have been almost entirely avoided; only ancient writers are introduced in relevant passages. The Special demands of schools and wider circles of cultured people have been kept in mind. The pictorial part of the work has also been increased in this edition by one or two examples. The two authors have worked on a mutually arranged plan in equal parts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of Sculpture, Vol. 3: In the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities British Museum The portraits fall into two classes, (1) those of celebrated Greeks of whom presumably in most instances there had existed contemporary portraits for the Gracco - Roman sculptor to Oopy from, and (2) those of eminent Romans. In the former, however poor the copy, it is generally easy to recognise the methods of the original Greek sculptor, whose technique, derived from the great age of ideal sculpture, gives tone to the details of feature and expres sion. To a considerable extent this Greek method of portraiture survives in the busts of Romans towards the end of the Republic and in the earlier part of the Empire. But from the time of Trajan onwards the Roman artists appear to have been mostly content with the easiest method of obtaining an effective likeness.
