Book Catalogue of the Mercantile Library of Philadelphia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Catalogue of the Mercantile Library of Philadelphia Classic Reprint written by Mercantile Library of Philadelphia and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Catalogue of the Mercantile Library of Philadelphia" was originally compiled by the Mercantile Library of Philadelphia located in Pennsylvania. This book acts as an "index" to the books and other materials inside the library rather than a than a true catalog of books. This publication was prepared to help readers find not only the books the library holds but also to ascertain the subject matter of each book and find other books grouped into similar subjects. This system was developed to assist readers in determining which books they would be interested in much more readily than they were able to do via the previous system. Every book held by the Mercantile Library is included here and can be located either under the name of the author or under the leading word of the title. All entries are thorough in their attempts to fully identify the book and present a clear idea of the book's scope and purpose. The publication also presents sidebar entries that explain certain topics in more detail and offer further exploration of a given book for the reader. Because a library collection is a constantly changing and evolving entity, this book provides more of an historic glimpse of the collection than one that is currently accurate. "Catalogue of the Mercantile Library of Philadelphia" is an interesting read for individuals intrigued by libraries, library collections, and library history. This book is very well organized in its approach and relatively easy to navigate for the interested reader. For anyone who wants to know all of the books contained within the vast collection at the Mercantile Library of Philadelphia near the end of the nineteenth century - this is the book for you! Book Buying List of Books for Small Libraries Classic Reprint

Download or read book Buying List of Books for Small Libraries Classic Reprint written by Zaidee Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buying List of Books for Small Libraries As the following list is intended merely as an aid in buying, regular cataloging rules have not been followed. It should there fore not be used as a guide for the form of the author's name. When there is a choice, the best known form of the author's name or a well-known pseudonym is used. In this edition there is no change from the character of the first list. The same general arrangement is retained and in most cases the same subject headings used. Every class is thoroughly revised and while there is a slight increase in the number of titles in sociology, science, useful arts and amusements, it results in a net increase of but 78 titles in the entire list. The fewest changes are in the list of children's books. One or two good inexpensive editions of standard books are added and some of the strikingly good stories of the past two years included. In a small library it is not important to buy the very latest child's story. To buy the best must be the aim of a library in the purchase of its children's books. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Public Library of Brookline HE Library, represented in the following catalogue, is believed to have been the first instituted under the general statute, authorizing towns and cities to raise and appropriate money for founding and maintaining public libraries. It was established by a vote of the town, March 30, 1857. The sum of 8934 - being for each ratable poll of the preceding year was appropriated for its foundation; and an additional sum of 8233 being 25 cents for each ratable poll was voted for its maintenance and increase during the then current year. These were the extreme sums which could be legally raised by taxation for the purpose. A suitable place having been provided, the Library was opened to the public, Dec. 2, 1857. It then contained 900 volumes. Liberal appropriations by the town, and generous gifts from private sources, year by year, increased the number of books; and when, in 1869, the present commodious building was completed, at a cost of with shelving for volumes, were placed in the alcoves. Book excerpt: The magic and wonder of winter’s first snowfall is perfectly captured in Ezra Jack Keat’s Caldecott Medal-winning picture book. Young readers can enjoy this celebrated classic as a full-sized board book, perfect for read-alouds of all kinds and a great gift for the holiday season. In 1962, a little boy named Peter put on his snowsuit and stepped out of his house and into the hearts of millions of readers. Universal in its appeal, this story beautifully depicts a child's wonder at a new world, and the hope of capturing and keeping that wonder forever. This big, sturdy edition will bring even more young readers to the story of Peter and his adventures in the snow. Ezra Jack Keats was also the creator of such classics as Goggles, A Letter to Amy, Pet Show!, Peter’s Chair, and A Whistle for Willie. (This book is also available in Spanish, as Un dia de nieve.) Praise for The Snowy Day: “Keats made Peter’s world so inviting that it beckons us. Perhaps the busyness of daily life in the 21st century makes us appreciate Peter even more—a kid who has the luxury of a whole day to just be outside, surrounded by snow that’s begging to be enjoyed.” —The Atlantic "Ezra Jack Keats's classic The Snowy Day, winner of the 1963 Caldecott Medal, pays homage to the wonder and pure pleasure a child experiences when the world is blanketed in snow."—Publisher's Weekly

Book Catalogue of My English Library Classic Reprint

Download or read book Catalogue of My English Library Classic Reprint written by Henry Stevens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of My English Library I confess that I am an advocate of fine bindings. But bookbinding is so much a matter of taste and individual fancy, that little need be said here, for every one can gratify his own taste according to his means. There are few things, however, upon which the rich can display their wealth and taste to better advantage than upon their libraries. Binding ad mits of an infinite variety of design in ornaments, and whether cheap or dear may, in skilful hands, always be kept within the bounds of good taste. For public libraries, where chiefly the contents of the books are regarded, cheap, or what is techni cally called half binding in calf or morocco, is usually sufficient but in private hands of the wealthy, where books are not only a library but articles of luxury and furniture, great pains should be taken to secure not only the best editions, but those adorned with a variety of choice and artistic bindings.
