Book Lessons from Modernism

Download or read book Lessons from Modernism written by Kevin Bone and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable reference for today’s green building movement examines twentieth-century modern architecture, including buildings by Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer, through the lens of sustainability. The hottest topics in contemporary architectural design and architectural history—the focus on sustainability and the evaluation of the modern movement—meet in Lessons from Modernism, a partnership with The Cooper Union that explores the ways in which the straightforward functional approach of modernist design creates environmentally sensitive solutions. Lessons from Modernism provides new insights into 25 buildings by a diverse selection of architects, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Paul Rudolph, Jean Prouvé, and Arne Jacobsen, and demonstrates how these architects integrated environmental concerns into their designs. Buildings are located across the United States, Central and South America, Cuba, Japan and more—and include houses, art centers, commercial buildings, and civic buildings. Lessons from Modernism is an affordable reference work for all interested in how architecture intersects with the green movement, pairing full descriptions of all buildings with analytical essays, featuring charts of climate zones and solar movement, and concluding with a comprehensive chronology that details how environmental consciousness evolved throughout the twentieth century.

Book X Ray Architecture

Download or read book X Ray Architecture written by Beatriz Colomina and published by Lars Muller Publishers. This book was released on 2019 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-Ray Architecture explores the enormous impact of medical discourse and imaging technologies on the formation, representation and reception of twentieth-century architecture. It challenges the normal understanding of modern architecture by proposing that it was shaped by the dominant medical obsession of its time: tuberculosis and its primary diagnostic tool, the X-ray. Modern architecture and the X-ray were born around the same time and evolved in parallel. While the X-ray exposed the inside of the body to the public eye, the modern building unveiled its interior, dramatically inverting the relationship between private and public. Architects presented their buildings as a kind of medical instrument for protecting and enhancing the body and psyche. Beatriz Colomina traces the psychopathologies of twentieth-century architecture--from the trauma of tuberculosis to more recent disorders such as burn-out syndrome and ADHD--and the huge transformations of privacy and publicity instigated by diagnostic tools from X-Rays to MRIs and beyond. She suggests that if we want to talk about the state of architecture today, we should look to the dominant obsessions with illness and the latest techniques of imaging the body--and ask what effects they have on the way we conceive architecture. --Publisher's website.

Book Caribbean Modernist Architecture

Download or read book Caribbean Modernist Architecture written by Gustavo Luis Moré and published by The Museum of Modern Art. This book was released on 2010 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February and March 2008, the International Program and the Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art organised the Museum's first symposium on the modernist architecture of the Caribbean and bordering Latin American countries, in collaboration with the Caribbean School of Architecture at the University of Technology, Kingston, Jamaica. The goal was to encourage scholarly, curatorial and broader educational awareness. Topics covered included regional and international legacies, preservation, environmental sustainability and urban planning, as they relate to modernist architectural history and contemporary practice. The presenters were leading architects and architectural historians from the region, and attendees included their colleagues as well as local and international university students, policy makers, civic leaders and developers from Jamaica, the surrounding Caribbean isalnds and the United States. This illustrated volume, co-published by MoMA and Archivos de Arquitectura Antillana (AAA), an architectural journal based in the Dominican Republic, presents the papers from this critical symposium in both English and Spanish, making them accessible to a broader public.
