This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition of Etchings by Rembrandt This copper had originally been engraved by Hercules Seghers with the representation of Tobit and the Angel. Only two impressions are known of the print in this state. The plate was then taken by Rembrandt, the figures of Tobit and the Angel effaced, and the figures of Joseph and the Virgin introduced in their places. The trees at the right and the foreground, as well as the figures, are Rembrandt's work. The remainder of the plate is substantially the way Hercules Seghers left it. Book Catalogue of Etchings and Dry Points by Rembrandt

Download or read book Catalogue of Etchings and Dry Points by Rembrandt written by Rembrandt Rembrandt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Etchings and Dry Points by Rembrandt: Selected for the Exhibition at the Grolier Club of the City of New York, April-May, 1900 The purpose of the present exhibition is to show fine impressions of as many as possible of the important examples of the etched work of Rembrandt, and to illustrate adequately both his range and power in etching. It is not for lack of material that the display is limited in numbers. While a complete exhibition of original impressions is impossible, yet from the private collections generously placed at the service of the Club, a more extended exhibition could have been made. The result, however, would not have been more representative of the artist's work. As is generally known, wide differences of opinion exist among recognized authorities concerning the genuineness of certain prints attributed to Rembrandt. The discussion which has followed the agitation of the subject by Sir Francis Seymour Haden, has led to the definite exclusion of a large number of etchings included in the earlier catalogues. Regarding others, the work of investigation and criticism still continues. Bartsch, in 1797, placed the total number of etchings and dry points by Rembrandt at 375. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of Rembrandt's Etchings, Vol. 1 of 2 F I 1he present catalogue is a revised edition of the one which appeared in 1912 in my Rembrandt's Etchings, an Essay and a Catalogue, with some Notes on the Drawings. The Introduction is also composed to a large extent of material from the same volume, but revised and re-arranged with the definite Object Of providing such notes as would be of most use to the student and collector of Rembrandt's etchings (e.g. In the addition Of a list of values). The volume of plates, to which a few subjects have been added since 1912, will no doubt be of service for purposes of identifica tion, and will, I hope, appeal equally to the amateur or artist who merely wishes to be reminded of this incomparable series of subjects. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition of Etchings and Drawings by Dutch Masters From Rembrandt to Bauer: With an Introduction by Carl Zigrosser; October 28 to November 20, 1915 Pen and wash drawing on toned paper. From the collections of W. Esdaile, Sir Thomas Lawrence, C. S. Bale, and J. P. Heseltine. Height, 454 inches; width, inches. Rembrandt's drawings show the artist in closest touch with life and nature in its accidental and passing phases. In his etchings and pictures he may often have worked as directly from nature, but the tendency in the larger and more formal works would be to generalize on the basis of his studies, and to leave the accidental for more absolute standards. As direct transcriptions of nature with the smallest means at an artist's disposal, Rembrandt's draw ings are unrivalled. In a few summary lines he presents form and action in their most essential characteristics; what is more, he expresses the vital principle underlying form and pervading action with inevitable incisiveness and significance of touch.
