Book Catalogue of an Exhibition of Engraved Portraits by Robert Nanteuil 1630 1678

This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition of Engraved Portraits by Robert Nanteuil (1630-1678): With an Introduction His earliest dated plates, about 1650, show strongly the influence of Claude Mellan. In general they are very quiet in tone, being practically without any deep shadows. The influence of Mellan is to be seen in the fact that the faces are almost entirely shaded with parallel lines, practically no cross hatching being used. The portraits of Ber nard de Foix and Le Bouthillier are examples of this manner. A little later, about the year 1654, his style changed, apparently under the influence of Morin. The general tone of the prints is still quiet, but a change may be noticed in the circumstance that the faces are partly shaded with very short lit tle burin strokes, which was an approach to the stipple method of Morin. The por trait of Dominique de I/igny is typical of this stage. The famous portrait of Nicolas Fouquet would also seem technically to be long to this period, although it bears the date of 1661. It was probably simply a re version to his earlier manner. From this period forward N anteuil seems to have oh tained more and more depth in his shadows, and to have used in the treatment of the faces a mixture of lines with light and very short burin strokes. The master's style steadily became broader and bolder and reached perhaps its culmination about the year 1658 to 1660. The year 1658 is marked by the wonderful portraits of Cambout, Basile Fouqaet, and Jean Loret. In these the treatment is very broad and masterly, more so, perhaps, than at any other period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition of Portraits Through the intercession of friends, Fai thorne was banished to France. He made Paris his home, and under the patronage of the Abb de Marolles, the great print col Iector, he studied constantly to improve and perfect his art. About 1650 he returned to London, married, and took a house near Temple Bar, where he engraved plates and sold prints - Italian, French, Dutch, etc., as well as his own. This was the period of his greatest activity. During the following thirty years he made a great variety of portraits, frontispieces, etc., retiring from print-selling in 1680 to a house in Printing House Yard, Blackfriars, where he still engraved plates and made a number of crayon portraits which were much admired. Faithorne died in 1691. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of the First Editions of the Works of Alexander Pope, (1688-1744): Together With a Collection of the Engraved Portraits of the Poet and of His Friends An attempt has been made to classify the numerous engraved portraits of Pope, which are arranged under the names of the several artists who painted his portrait. In the ah sence of any authoritative information on the subject of the original portraits in existence, it is possible some errors have been made in assigning the original after which the engrav ers worked. But it is hoped that the succes sors to the present compilers will be able to correct these errors as well as largely increase the record of engraved plates. It is a sig nificant fact that the present exhibition marks the two hundredth anniversary of the publi cation of the Essay on Criticism, which was the first book issued by the then unknown poet, whose influence in English literature dominated the century in which he lived. The fifth volume is intended to contain a section describing engraved portrait groups, a supplement dealing with portraits added during the printing of the Catalogue, and an index to painters and engravers. The present volume includes the letters S - Z. The same general principles of order and arrangement have been followed in this as in the former volumes.
