This beautifully illustrated book for the first time comprehensively examines the flowering of Persian painting and the visual arts of this period. It focuses on the growth of a remarkable tradition of life-size figural painting, virtually unseen in the Islamic world. Exquisite historic manuscripts, lacquer works, calligraphies and enamels further illuminate the subject. The Qajar Epoch carries essays by leading scholars exploring the historical and social context of the period. Book excerpt: In 'Now It Can Be Told,' Philip Gibbs offers a candid and unvarnished portrait of World War I, which stands out in stark contrast to the sanitized versions that were permissible under wartime censorship. Gibbs masterfully employs a rich, journalistic prose style that captures the harrowing experiences and untold stories of soldiers on the Western Front. His work is not only a literary accomplishment but also a piece of historical journalism that has significantly contributed to the contemporary understanding of the Great War. Within the literary context, his narrative breaks free from the constraints of his time, providing a raw and essential account of the true costs of conflict. Philip Gibbs, an esteemed war correspondent, bore witness to the atrocities of the First World War, through which he experienced the indelible traumas and heroism of the battlefield firsthand. This direct exposure to the horrors of war informed his reflective and compassionate approach in documenting the lives of soldiers and civilians affected by the conflict. Gibbs's narrative is fuelled by an urgency to reveal the truths that wartime censorship had suppressed, a testament to his commitment to journalistic integrity and transparency. The book comes highly recommended for readers with an interest in military history, journalism, and the literature of war. Gibbs's 'Now It Can Be Told' transcends its own era to resonate with contemporary audiences seeking a deeper understanding of the human condition amidst the chaos of war. It is an essential read for anyone who wishes to grasp the reality of warfare beyond the romanticism and valor often depicted, unveiling the courage, tragedy, and sometimes the mundanity, of life on the front lines.

Book Henry More 1614 1687 Tercentenary Studies

Download or read book Henry More 1614 1687 Tercentenary Studies written by S. Hutton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the Cambridge Platonists, Henry More has attracted the most scholar ly interest in recent years, as the nature and significance of his contribution to the history of thought has come to be better understood. This revival of interest is in marked contrast to the neglect of More's writings lamented even by his first biographer, Richard Ward, a regret echoed two centuries after his 1 death. Since then such attention as there has been to More has not always served him well. He has been dismissed as credulous on account of his belief in witchcraft while his reputation as the most mystical of the Cambridge 2 school has undermined his reputation as a philosopher. Much of the interest in More in the present century has tended to focus on one particular aspect of his writing. There has been considerable interest in his poems. And he has come to the attention of philosophers thanks to his having corresponded with Descartes. Latterly, however, interest in More has been rekindled by renewed interest in the intellectual history of the seventeenth century and Renaissance. And More has been studied in the context of seventeenth-cen tury science and the wider context of seventeenth-century philosophy. Since More is a figure who belongs to the Renaissance tradition of unified sapientia he is not easily compartmentalised in the categories of modern disciplines. Inevitably discussion of anyone aspect of his thought involves other aspects.

Book Insects and the Life of Man

Download or read book Insects and the Life of Man written by V.B. Wigglesworth and published by Springer. This book was released on 1976-11-25 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Patrick A. Buxton was appointed by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1926 to head their Department of Medical Entomology, he had formed the opinion that the control of the insect-borne diseases of the tropics was being impeded by lack of knowledge about the physiology of insects. He persuaded the Board of Management to agree to the selection of a lecturer who would endeavour to advance the subject of insect physiology; and at the suggestion of Sir Gowland Hopkins, under whom I had worked at Cambridge, and with the support of Sir Walter Morley Fletcher, Secretary of the Medical Research Council and a member of the Board of Management, I was appointed to this post - with opportunity for extensive travel to study medical entomology in the tropics and with abundant time for research. Some seventeen years later, during the war years, W. W. C. Topley, as Secretary of the Agricultural Research Council, was faced with the urgent need for improved methods of control of insect pests in agriculture and horticulture by insecticidal or other means. As a support for this objective he recommended the establishment of a Unit of Insect Physiology to carry out basic research which would be of potential value to agriculture; and I was invited to act as director. So once again I was able to undertake world-wide travel - to learn the elements of agricultural entomology.
