Book excerpt: An artist of pivotal importance to the generation of post-Impressionists from Seurat and Gauguin to Matisse and Picasso, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824 - 1898) played a crucial role in the history of late-19th-century French art and the development of modernism. He was an artist of great range, originality, and idiosyncratic invention who executed mural complexes, compelling easel paintings, and numerous works on paper. These two companion volumes--a critical study of the artist's life and art, and a catalogue raisonn of his paintings--introduce many of Puvis's works for the first time, assess his contribution, and restore him to the pantheon of modern masters. Volume I situates Puvis and his work in his time. With a wealth of new documentation, it addresses the theories, forces, and events that impinged on his art. Volume II is a complete compendium of Puvis's easel paintings and mural cycles for civic buildings throughout France as well as for the Boston Public Library.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The vibrant late paintings of Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) are considered by many to be among his finest achievements. Working in a small converted bedroom of his villa in the south of France, Bonnard suffused his late canvases with radiant Mediterranean light and dazzling color. Although his subjects were close at hand-usually everyday scenes taken from his immediate surroundings, such as the dining room table being set for breakfast, or a jug of flowers perched on the mantelpiece - Bonnard rarely painted from life. Instead, he preferred to make pencil sketches in small diaries and then rely on these, along with his memory, once in the studio." "This volume, which accompanies the first exhibition to focus on the interior and related still-life imagery from the last decades of Bonnard's long career, presents more than seventy-five paintings, drawings, and works on paper, many of them rarely seen in public and in some cases, little known. Although Bonnard's legacy may be removed from the succession of trends that today we consider the foundation of modernism, his contribution to French art in the early decades of the twentieth century is far more profound than history has generally acknowledged. In their insightful essays and catalogue entries the authors bring fresh critical perspectives to the ongoing reappraisal of Bonnard's reputation and to his place within the narrative of twentieth-century art."--Jacket

Download or read book John White Alexander written by Mary Anne Goley and published by Philip Wilson Publishers. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time of his death, the Pittsburgh-born John White Alexander (1856-1915) was an internationally recognized portrait painter, on a part with his contemporaries John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase. However the works that have earned him even greater acclaim than his portraits are his figure paintings of femmes fatales, usually richly attired in flowing dresses and striking elaborate poses. Alexander had been much in demand as a portraitist, both of men and children as well as women, but his real talent, which became evident relatively late in his career, lay in his ability to capture the essence of the female form. This talent blossomed after he encountered Juliette Very, the Parisian model who became his muse. Inspired by Juliette, his paintings are imbued with sentiment expressed through movement and gesture, and it was the portrayal of his models in this way that brought him fame. He also borrowed from the post-impressionist group of painters, the Nabis' use of bold abstract forms and flowing lines, and from James McNeil Whistler's muted coloration, to create his own unique style.
