Download or read book Blood Milk Ink Gold written by Rebecca Zorach and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people would be hard pressed to name a famous artist from Renaissance France. Yet sixteenth-century French kings believed they were the heirs of imperial Rome and commissioned a magnificent array of visual arts to secure their hopes of political ascendancy with images of overflowing abundance. With a wide-ranging yet richly detailed interdisciplinary approach, Rebecca Zorach examines the visual culture of the French Renaissance, where depictions of sacrifice, luxury, fertility, violence, metamorphosis, and sexual excess are central. Zorach looks at the cultural, political, and individual roles that played out in these artistic themes and how, eventually, these aesthetics of exuberant abundance disintegrated amidst perceptions of decadent excess. Throughout the book, abundance and excess flow in liquids-blood, milk, ink, and gold-that highlight the materiality of objects and the human body, and explore the value (and values) accorded to them. The arts of the lavish royal court at Fontainebleau and in urban centers are here explored in a vibrant tableau that illuminates our own contemporary relationship to excess and desire. From marvelous works by Francois Clouet to oversexed ornamental prints to Benvenuto Cellini's golden saltcellar fashioned for Francis I, Blood, Milk, Ink, Gold covers an astounding range of subjects with precision and panache, producing the most lucid, well-rounded portrait of the cultural politics of the French Renaissance to date.

Download or read book Poetry and Fable written by Ann Moss and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-09-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a major study of the development of French poetry in the Renaissance, which examines changes in style and vision by looking both at how poetry was read in this period and how it was written. Dr Moss examines vernacular versions of fables from Ovid's Metamorphoses, published between the end of the fifteenth century and beginning of the seventeenth century, which reveal fundamental changes both in reading habits and in assumptions about literary aesthetics and the relationship of literature to truth. Through detailed analysis of mythological narratives in the Ovidian tradition composed by Lemaire de Beiges, Francois Habert, Baif and Ronsard, among others, and by concentrating on a few specific mythological subjects Dr Moss is able to identify the salient features in these developments and so broaden our understanding of the aesthetic revolution which transformed the literature and mentality of France and Western Europe during the Renaissance.

Download or read book Iconography at the Crossroads written by Princeton University. Dept. of Art and Archaeology. Index of Christian Art and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As art historians draw increasingly from such cognate fields as literary theory and anthropology for new modes of inquiry, scholars in fields as diverse as music and the history of medicine are turning to images in art as sources of information for their respective disciplines. Focusing on the role of iconography in this cross-fertilization, these papers examine how students of the Middle Ages and Renaissance search for meaning in the subject matter of works of art. Art historians as well as scholars from other disciplines provide a broad spectrum of approaches to icongraphic research and to the methodological and theoretical issues involved. These papers were presented at a conference sponsored by the Index of Christian Art in Princeton in 1990. The contributers to this volume are Howard Mayer Brown, Michael Camille, John V.
