Download or read book Ancient Lines in the Landscape written by Frank Vermeulen and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, archaeological research in north-west Europe has developed a keen interest in the total landscape that was inhabited and used by man in ancient times. The present study of palaeo-landscapes constitutes an important contribution to the reconstruction of the morphology of protohistoric and Roman landscapes. By means of combined geo-archaeological methods and computer technology researchers from Ghent University have tried to understand the structure of pre-medieval landscape of northwestern Gaul. Intensive use of remote sensing techniques and the application of a Geographic Information System, combined with more traditional fieldwork and analysis, open the way to a new approach of man's delineated environment during the early formation stage of the European landscape. Although the authors have tested this new approach only in a restricted region of the Roman Empire, it can easily be applied in most other parts of the Classical World. As such this well-illustrated book not only presents a detailed account of innovative investigations on early landscape structures in parts of modern France, Belgium and the Netherlands, it also procures a concise methodological contribution to early historical landscape research in general.

Download or read book The Origins of the English written by Catherine Hills and published by Bristol Classical Press. This book was released on 2003-02-13 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National origins remain as important as they have ever been to our sense of identity. Accounts of the early history of the peoples of Europe, including the English, are key tools in our construction of that identity. National identity has been studied through a range of different types of evidence - historical, archaeological, linguistic and most recently genetic. This has caused problems of interdisciplinary communication. In this book Catherine Hills carefully and succinctly unravels these different perceptions and types of evidence to assess how far it is really possible to understand when and how the people living in south and east Britain became 'English'.
Download or read book Merovingian Mortuary Archaeology and the Making of the Early Middle Ages written by Bonnie Effros and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2003-03-03 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clothing, jewelry, animal remains, ceramics, coins, and weaponry are among the artifacts that have been discovered in graves in Gaul dating from the fifth to eighth century. Those who have unearthed them, from the middle ages to the present, have speculated widely on their meaning. This authoritative book makes a major contribution to the study of death and burial in late antique and early medieval society with its long overdue systematic discussion of this mortuary evidence. Tracing the history of Merovingian archaeology within its cultural and intellectual context for the first time, Effros exposes biases and prejudices that have colored previous interpretations of these burial sites and assesses what contemporary archaeology can tell us about the Frankish kingdoms. Working at the intersection of history and archaeology, and drawing from anthropology and art history, Effros emphasizes in particular the effects of historical events and intellectual movements on French and German antiquarian and archaeological studies of these grave goods. Her discussion traces the evolution of concepts of nationhood, race, and culture and shows how these concepts helped shape an understanding of the past. Effros then turns to contemporary multidisciplinary methodologies and finds that we are still limited by the types of information that can be readily gleaned from physical and written sources of Merovingian graves. For example, since material evidence found in the graves of elite families and particularly elite men is more plentiful and noteworthy, mortuary goods do not speak as directly to the conditions in which women and the poor lived. The clarity and sophistication with which Effros discusses the methods and results of European archaeology is a compelling demonstration of the impact of nationalist ideologies on a single discipline and of the struggle toward the more pluralistic vision that has developed in the post-war years.

Download or read book Britons in Anglo Saxon England written by N. J. Higham and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of the British presence in Anglo-Saxon England readdressed by archaeologists, historians, linguists, and place-name specialists. The number of native Britons, and their role, in Anglo-Saxon England has been hotly debated for generations; the English were seen as Germanic in the nineteenth century, but the twentieth saw a reinvention of the German "past". Today, the scholarly community is as deeply divided as ever on the issue: place-name specialists have consistently preferred minimalist interpretations, privileging migration from Germany, while other disciplinary groups have been less united in their views, with many archaeologists and historians viewing the British presence, potentially at least, as numerically significant or even dominant. The papers collected here seek to shed new light on this complex issue, by bringing together contributions from different disciplinary specialists and exploring the interfaces between various categories of knowledge about the past. They assemble both a substantial body of evidence concerning the presence of Britons and offer a variety of approaches to the central issues of the scale of that presence and its significance across the seven centuries of Anglo-Saxon England. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is more to artefact analysis than the study of chronology and provenance. This is the theme of these essays which are based on discussions at the Theoretical Archaeology Group conferences at Durham and Bradford in 1993 and 1994. The authors are concerned that some of the theoretical and practical orientations of artefact analysis are restrictive and of questionable validity. Contents include: Individual and community choice in present-day pottery production and exchange in the Andes (Bill Sillar); The social context of eating and drinking in early Roman Britain (Karen I Meadows); Historical, geographical and anthropological imaginations: early ceramics in southern Italy (M Z Pluciennik); From ceramic finishes to modes of production: Iron Age finewares from central France (Kevin Andrews); Why do excavation reports have finds catalogues? (Penelope M Allison); Family, household and production: the potters of the Saintonge, France, 1500 to 1800 (Elizabeth Musgrave); The social significance of imported medieval pottery (Duncan H Brown); Habitus, social identity and Anglo-Saxon pottery (P W Blinkhorn); Towards a phenomenological approach to the study of medieval pottery (C G Cumberpatch); Size is important: Iron Age vessel capacities in central and southern England (Ann Woodward & Paul Blinkhorn).
