Book excerpt: The complex and coherent development of Japanese art during the course of the nineteenth century was inadvertently disrupted by a political event: the Meiji Restoration of 1868. Scholars of both the preceding Edo (1615–1868) and the succeeding Meiji (1868–1912) eras have shunned the decades bordering this arbitrary divide, thus creating an art-historical void that the former view as a period of waning technical and creative inventiveness and the latter as one threatened by Meiji reforms and indiscriminate westernization and modernization. Challenging Past and Present, to the contrary, demonstrates that the period 1840–1890, as seen progressively rather than retrospectively, experienced a dramatic transformation in the visual arts, which in turn made possible the creative achievements of the twentieth century. The first group of chapters takes as its theme the diverse cultural currents of the transitional period, particularly as they applied to art.The second section deals with the inconsistent yet determinedly pragmatic courses pursed by artists, entrepreneurs, and patrons to achieve a secure footing in the uncertain terrain of early Meiji. Further chapters look at how painters and sculptors sought to absorb and integrate foreign influences and reinterpret their own stylistic mediums.

He was also, as this volume demonstrates, a maniacal taxonomist. In this zoological guidebook to cuckoldry and commerce, Fourier offers a caustic critique of the bankruptcy of marriage and the prostitution of the economy, and the hypocrisies of a civilization that over-regulates sexual congress while allowing the financial sector to screw over the public. Book excerpt: This book examines the new orientation of ideas on Chinese material culture in early 20th century London under the influence of a circle of enthusiasts and scholars, preeminent among which was George Eumorfopoulos (1863-1939), a Greek origin London businessman and collector. These ideas are placed within the context of earlier encounters between China and the West through trade and diplomacy as they unravelled between the 16th century and the late 19th century. The objects discussed form part of the Benaki Museum collection of Chinese art, in its majority donated by Eumorfopoulos between 1929 and 1936; this collection is a rare time capsule of the taste and preoccupations of the pre-World War II period with regards to China. The years between the collapse of the Qing dynasty in 1911 and the establishment of the People s Republic of China in 1949 marked an opening up of China to the rest of the world and coincided with the first archaeological excavations of the country s early cultures. Situated in London, a centre of imperialist power and global finance, George Eumorfopoulos and his entourage were instrumental in acquiring, assessing, interpreting and manipulating the previously-unseen objects. Eumorfopoulos also acted as an intermediary between the contemporary art scene (the tenets of which informed his taste in the first place) and these ancient artefacts, giving rise to the studio pottery movement in England and beyond. The years of isolation which followed allowed aspects of this vision to become canonical and influence scholarly production on Chinese material culture. Research over the last 25 years has allowed a reassessment of this vision. This ground-breaking publication perceives approximately 100 artefacts as actors within constantly evolving sets of action, as players in a game of power, knowledge and taste. This is a book about China and the West in the 20th century and the roles antiquity and its material manifestations acted in the re-negotiation of this cultural interplay. "

He quickly fell in with the Dadaists, and his art changed. He pioneered a new art form, a cameraless photograph he called the 'Rayograph'. Champs délicieux documents that year in Paris by reproducing the correspondence between Man Ray and Howald and by publishing Howald's personal copy of Ray's album (also Champs délicieux) from that year - the first significant body of Ray's work. By placing these images in the context of the letters, Champs délicieux recreates an important turning point in Ray's career and a definitive moment in art history. This collection, exhibited in the fall of 2000 by co-publisher University of Toronto Art Centre, was edited by Steven Manford, who is currently assembling, with Timothy Baum, a catalogue raisonné of the Rayographs.

Approaching the subject with new questions and methods, they have reconsidered the importance of the Society in many sectors, including those related to the sciences and the arts. They have also looked at the Jesuits as emblematic of certain traits of early modern Europeans, especially as those Europeans interacted with 'the Other' in Asia and the Americas. Originating in an international conference held at Boston College in 1997, the thirty-five essays here reflect this new historiographical trend. Focusing on the Old Society- the Society before its suppression in 1773 by papal edict- they examine the worldwide Jesuit undertaking in such fields as music, art, architecture, devotional writing, mathematics, physics, astronomy, natural history, public performance, and education, and they give special attention to the Jesuits' interaction with non-European cultures, in North and South America, China, India, and the Philippines. A picture emerges not only of the individual Jesuit, who might be missionary, diplomat, architect, and playwright over the course of his life in the Society, but also of the immense and many-faceted Jesuit enterprise as forming a kind of 'cultural ecosystem'. The Jesuits of the Old Society liked to think they had a way of proceeding special to themselves. The question, Was there a Jesuit style, a Jesuit corporate culture? is the thread that runs through this interdisciplinary collection of studies.
