It came into being as the Pittsburgh Academy in the year 1786 and was formally incorporated by Act of Legisla ture in February, 1787. It was re-incorporated as the Western University of Pennsylvania in February, 1819. It has educated in whole or in part more than six thousand of the young men of Western Pennsylvania and adjacent States, and its alumni have filled many of the most distinguished offices in the gift of the Commonwealth and the nations.
