Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalog of the Newest, Rarest and Finest Iris, 1930: Accompanied With Some Information About Iris Which May Be of Interest to Iris Lovers A grower must exercise the greatest care in making a selection for introduction from this great army of newcomers. The carefully selected foreign list offers less trouble. The Cayeux list each year has shown us new lines of development because M. Cayeux uses his newest developments for breeding purposes before putting them on the market and thus is in advance of the American breeders using his introductions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalog of the Newest, Rarest and Finest Iris, 1931: Accompanied With Some Information About Iris Which May Be of Interest to Iris Lovers We see hybridizers naming and introducing from 20 to 50 or more seedlings in a season. Anyone familiar with iris knows that no single hybridizer can, outside of miracles, have 50 new iris in one year worth placing on the market. The new introductions in this catalog have been selected with a knowledge of the best varieties already in commerce and we have no hesitation in saying that each is distinct and is not a mere duplicate or slight improvement on some other existing variety. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalog of the Newest, Rarest and Finest Iris, 1927: Accompanied With Some Information About Iris Which May Be of Interest to Iris Lovers Miss Grace Sturtevant is unquestionably our foremost -americ hybridizer. A very considerable number of her introductions at prese are listed in all foreign catalogues; this includes B. Y. Morrison, Avalc Afterglow, Dream, Mme. Cheri, Mother of Pearl, Nancy Orne, Que Caterina, Shekinah. She has a tremendous number of fine Iris to her credit, and all i can do is to call attention to those we consider the finest of them. Go Imperial, is the best yellow, with the sole exception of Am'br Mother of Pearl is known to everyone; Dream, a pink ranks very clo to the top; Tyrian is a wonderful deep claret color, with very velve falls and is one of Miss Sturtevant's masterpieces. We have not be fortunate enough to see all her varieties, but our favorite is Naon which is something like Glamour and quite as good, Rose Madder is beautiful and unusual Iris that does not seem to have its merits sui ciently well known to the public. We are offering this year her ne white called Snow White, which we have never seen, but those who ha say it is a magnificent Iris of beauty and distinction. We would say th the principal characteristics of Miss Sturtevant's Iris seedlings are tremendous variety as to color; clear, rich, beautiful colors and col combinations and style and poise of the flower on the stem. George Yeld of England raises thousands of seedlings, but intr duces very few, but the few he does introduce are of outstanding mer Neptune, 1916, is still a favorite flower and we do not think that it h been superseded. Asia, 1920, is so well known by every Iris lover th comment is unnecessary. Prospero, 1920, is still an outstanding variet Lord of June, 1911, is probably the most popular and best known Ii in the world today. Book The Worlds Finest Irises 1929 1930 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Worlds Finest Irises 1929 1930 Classic Reprint written by Robert Wayman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-07 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Worlds Finest Irises, 1929-1930 In addition to the varieties listed, I have hundreds of other varieties that are not being listed this year for various reasons. Many of them are imported varieties that are being grown under Government Permit and cannot be sold until they are released for distribution by the United States Department of Agriculture; others are still under test, and of others my stock. Is too small to justify listing them this year, although quotations can be made on request. Almost every choice Iris is grown here. If I knew of a fine variety that is not included in my collection I would secure it. The figures given immediately after the name of a variety represent the recent ratings given by the American Iris Society, the first figure being the Exhibition Rating, or the rating as an exhibition flower; the second figure being the Garden Rating, or the rating for its landscape or garden qualities. Those not rated are mostly rare or recently introduced varieties that were not sufficiently well known by the jurors to rate them. You will notice the entire absence of poorly rated varieties in my collection. In the American Iris Society ratings, 100 is considered perfect (no variety is ever voted perfect, as room must always be left for improvement). The official ratings are as follows. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Iris Lover's Catalog: With Iris Map for 1930 Some will wonder at the seeming odd application of this word. However, on a little reflection it will be found a very fit designation as applied to the work at hand. This title was used in the first edition of this catalog in 1928. A map is a bird's eye view of large and complex areas and serves as a means of orientation as to your whereabouts. This is exactly what the four color group tables or maps of Iris are for us. First you have the complete View, the extent of the particular color field. The out standing things are noted at a glance, the others in their proper relation. Questions of height, season, hardiness can be noted instantly. Variations as bicolors, blended varieties are noted. In short an effective clear shorthand description. Supplementing this are a number of descriptive notes bringing out characteristics that cannot be presented in table form. They restore the human touch. Between the two treat ments a very complete picture is formed. This should make Iris selection for those who wish to put in a little study as easy and interesting as it can humanly be made. If your interest in Iris is new and you have no large collection by all means consider the various collections offered on our Collection Pages. Originator - First and second column show originators and year of introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
