Book Frank Lloyd Wright

Download or read book Frank Lloyd Wright written by Barry Bergdoll and published by Moma. This book was released on 2017 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in conjunction with a major exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, this catalogue reveals new perspectives on the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, a designer so prolific and familiar as to nearly preclude critical reexamination. Structured as a series of inquiries into the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Archives, the book is a collection of scholarly explorations rather than an attempt to construct a master narrative. Each chapter centers on a key object from the archive that an invited author has "unpacked"-interpreting and contextualizing it, tracing its meanings and connections, and juxtaposing it with other works from the archive, from MoMA, or from outside collections. The publication aims to open up Wright's work to questions, interrogations, and debates, and to highlight interpretations by contemporary scholars, both established Wright experts and others considering this iconic figure from new and illuminating perspectives.

  • Author : Douglas Darden
  • Publisher : Princeton Architectural Press
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN : 9780910413633
  • Pages : 168 pages

Download or read book Condemned Buildings written by Douglas Darden and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Condemned Building is one of our most requested out-of-print books, so we've done a special limited edition reprint (only 750 copies) to meet the ongoing demand for this book. Not long after this book was published, the only one on the work of this gifted architect and delineator, Doug died of leukemia. Fans and friends, including legions of students, quickly bought up the remaining copies, and the difficulty of finding this book has undoubtedly only increased its appeal. Doug said that these projects were "the underbelly of canonical architectural principles and forms", and indeed many are dark, brooding, or sexual in nature: a "kamasutra with the negative." The book covers ten projects, in model, drawing, and "psychoanalytical" text. Douglas Darden taught at Harvard, Columbia, and most recently the University of Colorado at Denver. He was a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. He is sorely missed, but we're happy to be able to offer his book once again.

Book Architecture Is All Over

Download or read book Architecture Is All Over written by Esther Choi and published by . This book was released on 2014-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the comprehensive scale of the city to the small scale of the installation, Architecture Is All Over responds to the field's dichotomous conditions of monumentality and invisibility. Structured as an unfolding spectrum that ranges from obsolescence to pervasiveness, this twenty-contributor collection assembles recent and historical evidence of the discipline's "all over-ness." The title's double entendre celebrates the enduring instability, unpredictability and mutability that form architecture's motive core. In conversations, speculations and case studies, Architecture Is All Over refuses the easy figment of crisis to narrate new possibilities for design theory and praxis.

Book The Arab City

Download or read book The Arab City written by Amale Andraos and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving beyond reductive notions of identity, myths of authenticity, fetishized traditionalism, or the constructed opposition of tradition and modernity, The Arab City: Architectural and Representation critically engages contemporary architectural and urban production in the Middle East. Taking the "Arab City" and "Islamic Architecture" as sites of investigation rather than given categories, this book reframes the region's buildings, cities, and landscapes and broadens its architectural and urban canons. Arab cities are multifaceted places and sites of layered historical imaginaries; defined by regional and territorial economies, they bridge scales of production and political engagement. The essays collected here investigate cultural representation, the evolution of historical cities, contemporary architectural practices, emerging urban conditions, and responsive urban imaginaries in the Arab World. With contributions from Ashraf Abdalla, Senan Abdelqader, Nadia Abu ElÂ-Haj, Su'ad Amiry, Amale Andraos, Mohammed al-Asad, George Arbid, Mohamed Elshahed, Yasser Elsheshtawy, Rania Ghosn, Saba Innab, Adrian Lahoud, Lila Abu Lughod, Ziad Jamaleddine, Ahmed Kanna, Bernard Khoury, Laura Kurgan, Ali Mangera, Reinhold Martin, Timothy Mitchell, Magda Mostafa, Nasser Rabbat, Hashim Sarkis, Felicity Scott, Hala Warde, Mark Wasiuta, Eyal Weizman, Mabel O. Wilson, and Gwendolyn Wright.

Book excerpt: The essays in this volume examine what we talk about when we talk about climate, particularly in relation to architecture and its allied fields. How does climate inflect our understanding of human settlement, global migration, spatial violence, and resource extraction? How does climate figure into our conception of what architecture is and does? What are the material and conceptual infrastructures that render climate legible, knowable, and actionable? How do these questions offer new vantage points on the architectural ramifications of climate change, amplifying our understanding of resiliency, sustainability, and ecotechnology? Investigating climatic territories, imaginaries, and visibility, these essays clarify the exigencies of environment through design.

Book Henri Labrouste

  • Publisher : The Museum of Modern Art
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 0870708392
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Henri Labrouste written by Henri Labrouste and published by The Museum of Modern Art. This book was released on 2012 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henri Labrouste is one of the few nineteenth-century architects consistently lionized as a precursor of modern architecture throughout the twentieth century and into our own time. The two magisterial glass-and-iron reading rooms he built in Paris gave form to the idea of the modern library as a collective civic space. His influence was both immediate and long-lasting, not only on the development of the modern library but also on the exploration of new paradigms of space, materials and luminosity in places of great public assembly. Published to accompany the first exhibition devoted to Labrouste in the United States--and the first anywhere in the world in nearly 40 years--this publication presents nearly 225 works in all media, including drawings, watercolors, vintage and modern photographs, film stills and architectural models. Essays by a range of international architecture scholars explore Labrouste's work and legacy through a variety of approaches.
