Book excerpt: Published to accompany a major exhibition of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot's paintings held in Paris and Ottawa during 1996, and forthcoming to New York. From nearly 3,000 paintings by this poetic 19th-century artist, the curators chose 163 works, which are reproduced here along with full art-historical discussions of each. Three major essays chronicle Corot's life and the development of his art; additional essays elucidate the subject of forgeries and describe the collecting of his works. Much original new scholarship is included along with a review of the scholarly literature, a concordance, and a chronology. 9.5x12.5"Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Download or read book Architectural Terracottas from the Regia written by Susan B. Downey and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Regia was the house of the Pontifex Maximus, Rome's High Priest, who lived in the Forum. The men who held this office played an important role in the life of the Roman state for centuries: the earliest Regia dates to the seventh century B.C.E., and it was rebuilt frequently. Susan B. Downey has extensively studied the sixth-century phase of the building, and in this valuable work she lays out the scheme for the architectural terracottas. These fragments allow the reconstruction of almost the entire decorative system for the building. Art historians and archaeologists will welcome this book. It also contains much of interest for Roman social historians and for students and scholars of early Italy and its communities.

Download or read book Hell in the Byzantine World written by Angeliki Lymberopoulou and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 1095 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imagery of Hell, the Christian account of the permanent destinations of the human soul after death, has fascinated people over the centuries since the emergence of the Christian faith. These landmark volumes provide the first large-scale investigation of this imagery found across the Byzantine and post-Byzantine world. Particular emphasis is placed on images from churches across Venetian Crete, which are comprehensively collected and published for the first time. Crete was at the centre of artistic production in the late Byzantine world and beyond and its imagery was highly influential on traditions in other regions. The Cretan examples accompany rich comparative material from the wider Mediterranean – Cappadocia, Macedonia, the Peloponnese and Cyprus. The large amount of data presented in this publication highlight Hell's emergence in monumental painting not as a concrete array of images, but as a diversified mirroring of social perceptions of sin.

Download or read book Tomb Robberies at the End of the New Kingdom written by Valentina Gasperini and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the 19th century W.M.F. Petrie excavated a series of assemblages at the New Kingdom Fayum site of Gurob. These deposits, known in the Egyptological literature as 'Burnt Groups', were composed by several and varied materials (mainly Egyptian and imported pottery, faience, stone and wood vessels, jewellery), all deliberately burnt and buried in the harem palace area of the settlement. Since their discovery these deposits have been considered peculiar and unparalleled. Many scholars were challenged by them and different theories were formulated to explain these enigmatic 'Burnt Groups'. The materials excavated from these assemblages are now curated at several Museum collections across England: Ashmolean Museum, British Museum, Manchester Museum, and Petrie Museum. For the first time since their discovery, this book presents these materials all together. Gasperini has studied and visually analysed all the items. This research sheds new light on the chronology of deposition of these assemblages, additionally a new interpretation of their nature, primary deposition, and function is presented in the conclusive chapter. The current study also gives new information on the abandonment of the Gurob settlement and adds new social perspective on a crucial phase of the ancient Egyptian history: the transition between the late New Kingdom and the early Third Intermediate Period. Beside the traditional archaeological sources, literary evidence ('The Great Tomb Robberies Papyri') is taken into account to formulate a new theory on the deposition of these assemblages.
Download or read book The Archive of Thotsutmis Son of Panouphis written by Jacqueline E. Jay and published by Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago. This book was released on 2021-07-31 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Archive of Thotsutmis, Son of Panouphis presents for the first time one of the largest collections of Demotic ostraca to have been discovered intact by archaeologists in the twentieth century. Rarely have such deposits been found in situ. Excavated by Ambrose Lansing on behalf of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1915-16 at the site of Deir el-Bahari, the integrity and context of this find are critical to the proper understanding of the texts it contained. Through the publication and analysis of this archive of Demotic and Greek texts recorded on ostraca, Muhs, Scalf, and Jay reconstruct the microhistory of Thotsutmis, son of Panouphis, and his family, who worked in Egypt on the west bank of Thebes as priests in the mortuary industry during the early Ptolemaic Period in the third century BC. The forty-two ostraca published in this volume provide a rare opportunity to explore the intersections between an intact ancient archive of private administrative documents and the larger social and legal contexts into which they fit. What the reconstructed microhistory reveals is an ancient family striving to make it among the wealthy and connected social network of Theban choachytes and pastophoroi, while they simultaneously navigated the bureaucratic maze of taxes, fees, receipts, and legal procedures of the Ptolemaic state.
