Book excerpt: The newest, most updated book on Prince available today—now updated with information about the afterlife of his work following his untimely death. Famously reticent and perennially controversial, Prince was one of the few music superstars who remained, largely, an enigma—even up to his premature death on April 21, 2016. A fixture of the pop canon, Prince is widely held to be the greatest musician of his generation and will undoubtedly remain an inspiring and singular talent. This revised and updated second edition of this meticulously researched biography is the most comprehensive work on Prince yet published. Unlike other Prince books, this one eschews speculation into the artist's highly guarded private life and instead focuses deep and sustained attention exactly where it should be: on his work. Acclaimed British novelist and critic Matt Thorne draws on years of research and dozens of interviews with Prince's intimate associates (many of whom have never spoken on record before) to examine every phase of the musician's 35-year career, including nearly every song—released and unreleased—that Prince has recorded. Originally released in the UK in 2012, this revised and updated second US edition of Prince includes updated content regarding work released and made available after the artist’s death.. This astonishingly rich, almost encyclopedic biography is a must-have for any serious fan of Prince.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1943 Ernest Hemingway, living in Cuba with his third wife and eleven cats, wrote to his first wife: One cat just leads to another ... The place is so damned big it doesn't really seem as though there were many cats until you see them all moving like a mass migration at feeding time ... He always too great pleasure in writing to his family about his cats and how they were getting along. Family and pets played an important role in Hemingway's life, revealing a softer side to his character than is usually portrayed by the macho image of the hunter and fisherman. His pets were mostly cats--the number at Finca Vigia, his Cuban home, at one time swelling to fifty-seven. He called the cats "purr factories" and "love sponges" who soaked up love in return for comfort and companionship"--Dust jacket cover.

  • Pages : 974 pages

Download or read book Trilogy of Terror written by Stephen Gresham and published by Crossroad Press. This book was released on 2017-08-12 with total page 974 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in one collection, three of Stephen Gresham's classic horror novels -- Moon Lake, Rockabye Baby, and Night Touch. *** Moon Lake: FEAR GROWS ON MOON LAKE … And so do hundreds of beautiful water hyacinths. Their lavender petals caress the fog-enshrouded surface. Their sweet-smelling fragrance speaks of passion and death … EVIL GROWS ON MOON LAKE … And honeymooners Michael and Sandy Williams sense the uneasiness. The humming of the insects is too shrill. The mist is too suffocating. The hyacinths are too overgrown … HORROR GROWS ON MOON LAKE … And there is no way to stop it. In the murky depths, through the lush purple flowers, an almost human face takes form. Its glowing eyes pierce the water. Its icy breath chills the night air. It reaches out to claim the innocent — to nourish the evil that lurks in MOON LAKE. *** Night Touch: HELPING HANDS Rob, Andrea, and Adam had been best friends ever since they were children. Rob and Andrea didn't care that Adam was blind and ugly and the other kids made fun of him. They always stood by him. But that summer—the summer they turned fifteen—their friendship would be put to the test in ways beyond their darkest nightmares … KILLING HANDS The mysterious stranger had called the marking on Adam's left hand the Cross of Dark Fortune, and because of it he was able to give Adam the "night touch." Suddenly Adam could see without seeing—drawing pictures, typing, playing the guitar just like everyone else. But his gift demanded a horrifically high price—a price to be paid in evil, death, and blood! *** Rockabye Baby: Mr. Macready was such a nice old man. He liked to watch the children walking home from school, especially the little girls. In fact, Mr. Macready knew all about the children of Granite Heights—their names, their houses, even the nights their parents were away. And when he put on his white nurse's uniform and smeared his lips with blood-red lipstick, any child would be happy to let him through the door. Oh, they always stared a bit at his clear plastic gloves. But that was nothing compared to how they stared when he got his hands around their fragile little necks and crooned … ROCKABYE BABY.

Download or read book Evil Lords written by Nikos Panou and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evil Lords uses the prism of bad rule or tyranny to enhance our understanding of political discourse from the ancient world to the Renaissance, elucidating premodern notions of sovereignty as well as the relation between ethics and politics, the individual and society, power, and propaganda. Eleven chapters present case studies exploring Hebrew, Graeco-Roman, Byzantine, early, high and late medieval, and Renaissance conceptions and representations of bad or tyrannical government. Since bad rule is always a perversion of the norm, its shifting conceptualizations shed light on historically specific assessments of what constitutes acceptable and legitimate political behavior. Meanwhile, political debate also reflects specific power structures, authorial intent, and audience expectations. Each of the essays, therefore, examines bad rule and its agents within the ideological frameworks and societal patterns of the respective periods, thereby painting a picture of historical and intellectual change. Despite these often profound variations, however, the volume also shows that it is meaningful to think of a Western tradition of tyranny in the premodern world that derived from shared roots in Classical and biblical thought and was further defined by ongoing cross-fertilization spanning two millennia. Thus, Evil Lords offers scholars and students of Western political theory, history, and literature a critical framework through which to revisit the longue durée of premodern political reflection.
