In 1988, Cat Island became the location of the first oil drilling ever in the Mississippi Sound and in 2010 was one of the islands devastated by the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Where they originally came from is unknown, but the author imagines a scenario in which they came to the island on the ships of Blackbeard and another pirate. Little Matey and Grog, another pirate cat she meets at Ocracoke, are present when the battle at Teache's Hole takes place and Blackbeard is defeated. She and Grog stay on the island and begin a family--the supposed ancestors of the feral cats of Ocracoke today.
