Book Media Literacy and the Emerging Citizen

Download or read book Media Literacy and the Emerging Citizen written by Paul Mihailidis and published by Peter Lang Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2014 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Media Literacy and the Emerging Citizen is about enhancing engagement in a digital media culture and the models that educators, parents and policy makers can utilize to place media-savvy youth into positions of purpose, responsibility and power. Two specific challenges are at the core of this book's argument that media literacy is the path toward more active and robust civic engagement in the 21st century: How can media literacy enable core competencies for value-driven, diverse and robust digital media use? How can media literacy enable a more civic-minded participatory culture? These challenges are great, but they need to be examined in their entirety if media literacy is to begin to address the opportunities they present for democracy, participation and discourse in a digital media age. By presenting information that places media literacy at the center of what it means to be an engaged citizen, educators and policy makers will understand why media literacy must be integrated into formal and informal education systems before it's too late

Book excerpt: In this electrifying thriller—a bestseller in Great Britain and Ireland—Alex Barclay creates a stunning array of contrasts—from the violence of a cop’s world to the fragility of an embattled marriage, from the danger of New York’s gritty streets to the quiet of a seaside Irish village. With brilliance and subtlety, Barclay delivers a nerve-wracking tale of a troubled family, facing a brutal danger rushing relentlessly out of the past. One year has passed since a kidnapping drama exploded into violence on a New York street. And for NYPD detective Joe Lucchesi, the memory of that terrible moment is still alive. Joe’s wife, Anna, has brought him and their teenage son to Ireland, hoping to repair their fragile marriage—and cut the cord between Joe and the job. But when the girlfriend of their son vanishes, Joe begins to suspect that the crime may have its roots in his old life—and that someone has followed him all the way there…. An outsider in Ireland, Joe watches with rising apprehension as local cops try to solve the disappearance—and then reacts with fury when his son becomes the leading suspect. Frantically, Joe tries to piece together clues to the crime, certain that a predator has come to Ireland in a twisted act of vengeance. And in a culture he doesn’t understand, among people who may or may not be his friends, Joe must find a way to strike back…against a vicious killer who has Joe’s family in his sights.... A novel that plunges like a knife, Darkhouse delves into the intimate struggles between a husband and wife, between lovers and desperate friends. Seething with menace and mounting dread, Alex Barclay’s ingenious tale of a family under siege ratchets up the suspense one shocking revelation at a time as it races to its shattering climax....

Download or read book Critical Civic Literacy written by Joseph L. DeVitis and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has received the AESA (American Educational Studies Association) Critics Choice Award 2013. Do we live in a democracy? Have we ever practiced democratic education? Will our children and grandchildren inherit a sane or sick society and political order? Those are some of the profound questions that this book tackles, within a broad and evocative conversation on civic literacy in America. Amid calls for academic standardization and high-stakes testing, civic education, once a cornerstone of public schools, has been relegated to a tertiary space. The eloquent voices in this text articulate critical perspectives on citizenship education because they realize the future of our commonwealth may well be at stake. This important and timely book is a must-read for those interested in civics, social studies, social education, social foundations of education, and educational policy studies. Yet it will also appeal more generally to all educators and education professionals, policymakers, and public officials: it is written for all those who want to revive more humane possibilities for a polity in peril.

Book excerpt: Today, Ambrose Bierce is best remembered for his blazingly satirical take on politics and society in general, which was probably best encapsulated in The Devil's Dictionary. However, Bierce paid his literary dues as a war reporter, and battlefield conflicts were a frequent topic of his fiction. A Son of the Gods and A Horseman in the Sky brings together a pair of exquisitely observed short tales of the American Civil War.

Book History Of Famous Orators

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marcus Tullius Cicero
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2023-06
  • ISBN : 9781805476009
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book History Of Famous Orators written by Marcus Tullius Cicero and published by . This book was released on 2023-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cicero is considered to be Rome's greatest orator and prose writer. His writing is some of the best classical Latin still in existence. Cicero introduced Rome to Greek philosophy and created the Latin philosophical vocabulary. This book contains two selections. Cicero's Brutus or History of Famous Orators was written during the end of the civil war in Africa. It discusses all the Roman and Greek speakers of any note at the time. The conference is supposed to have been held with Atticus, and their friend Brutus. The Orator was written shortly after and is a plan, or critical delineation, of what he esteemed the most finished eloquence, or style of Speaking. As the following Rhetorical Pieces have never appeared before in the English language, I thought a Translation of them would be no unacceptable offering to the Public. The character of the Author (Marcus Tullius Cicero) is so universally celebrated, that it would be needless, and indeed impertinent, to say any thing to recommend them. The first of them was the fruit of his retirement, during the remains of the Civil War in Africa; and was composed in the form of a Dialogue. It contains a few short, but very masterly sketches of all the Speakers who had flourished either in Greece or Rome, with any reputation of Eloquence, down to his own time; and as he generally touches the principal incidents of their lives, it will be considered, by an attentive reader, as a concealed epitome of the Roman history. The conference is supposed to have been held with Atticus, and their common friend Brutus, in Cicero's garden at Rome, under the statue of Plato, whom he always admired, and usually imitated in his dialogues: and he seems in this to have copied even his double titles, calling it Brutus, or the History of famous Orators. It was intended as a supplement, or fourth book, to three former ones, on the qualifications of an Orator. The second, which is intitled The Orator, was composed a very short time afterwards (both of them in the 61st year of his age) and at the request of Brutus. It contains a plan, or critical delineation, of what he himself esteemed the most finished Eloquence, or style of Speaking. He calls it The Fifth Part, or Book, designed to complete his Brutus, and the former three on the same subject. It was received with great approbation; and in a letter to Lepta, who had complimented him upon it, he declares, that whatever judgment he had in Speaking, he had thrown it all into that work, and was content to risk his reputation on the merit of it. But it is particularly recommended to our curiosity, by a more exact account of the rhetorical composition, or prosaic harmony of the ancients, than is to be met with in any other part of his works. As to the present Translation, I must leave the merit of it to be decided by the Public; and have only to observe, that though I have not, to my knowledge, omitted a single sentence of the original, I was obliged, in some places, to paraphrase my author, to render his meaning intelligible to a modern reader. My chief aim was to be clear and perspicuous: if I have succeeded in that, it is all I pretend to. I must leave it to abler pens to copy the Eloquence of Cicero. Mine is unequal to the task.
