Book India s Villages in the 21st Century

Download or read book India s Villages in the 21st Century written by Surinder S. Jodhka and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post India’s economic liberalization in the 1990s, the village ceased to be central to ongoing sociological concerns. As a result, the period saw a marginalization of rural life and agrarian economy in the national imagination. However, in the 21st century as India transforms, so does its rural life. This book revisits the realities of contemporary rural India, exploring the trajectories of change across regions such as those in rural economies, the relationship of villages to the outside world, and the dynamics of caste inequalities. The volume puts together 14 papers based on empirical studies carried out by sociologists, social anthropologists, and economists over the past 15 years to begin a holistic conversation on contemporary rural India which continues to be an important site of social, political, and economic activities. India’s Villages in the 21st Century stresses diversity as a fundamental structure of Indian economy and society and illustrates the point by focusing on the economies, patterns of settlements, and organization of social and political life in India’s villages.

Book Untouchability in Rural India

Download or read book Untouchability in Rural India written by Ghanshyam Shah and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2006-08-04 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book presents systematic evidence of the incidence and extent of the practice of untouchability in contemporary India. It is based on the results of a very large survey covering 560 villages in eleven states. The field data is supplemented by information concerning associated forms of discrimination which Dalits face in their daily lives./-//-/This study finds that untouchability is practised in one form or another in almost 80 per cent of the villages surveyed. It is most prevalent in the religious and personal spheres. While the evidence presented in this book suggests that the more blatant and extreme forms of untouchability appear to have declined, discrimination is still practised in one form or another. The most widespread manifestations are in access to water and to cremation or burial grounds, as also when it comes to the major life cycle rituals. The survey also found that the notion of untouchability continues to pervade the public sphere, including in a host of state institutions and the interactions that occur within them.

Download or read book Who Were the Shudras written by Bhimrao Ambedkar and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2023-03-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who Were the Shudras? 1946 book by Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar on the history of the Shudra (lowest) Varna of the Indian caste system. The book is dedicated to Jyotirao Phule and seeks to dispel the idea that in India, Shudras are an untouchable caste. Ambedkar references Indian texts such as The Vedas and Mahabharata, among others, to suggest that the Shudras were really Aryan rulers who were demoted to a lower caste after a protracted struggle with the Brahmans. Ambedkar also analyses the Aryan race theory and disagrees with the widely accepted Indo-Aryan migration narrative in the history of the race. The book debunks beliefs and ideas and aims to foster compassion for a caste in India that is misunderstood and mistreated.
