Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Schmedit: This past weekend my fiancé (24 M) and I (23 F) were at a party at a friend’s and I’ll admit we both got pretty wasted.... Apparently sometime that night he asked me if it was okay to summon a demon for a threesome before our wedding, and according to him, I told him, “Yes.” I don’t actually remember this happening so clearly? But his friends must have heard me—because a week later, they’d all pitched in to have a Delectably Demonic ™ summoning kit delivered to our house for him. I want to put my foot down, but that would make him sad. I think he was really looking forward to it after I told him it’d be okay—and his friends really did spend a lot of money on this thing. It’s top of the line, and they can’t return it. You know how demons are. So I kind of feel like a jerk. I mean, I did say yes, and I don’t want to let him down. If I tell him no . . . AITA? AITA? is a sizzling sapphic romcom based on instantly recognizable internet lore.

Download or read book Donavan s Story written by Evette DuLuv and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-08-13 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My story is about an Irish family and some of the joys and woes they have. Also, I fit in some macabre elements, a little wolf stuff, not really bloody, maybe a little silly though. Nowadays, with all the vampire and werewolf stories, they get too bloody and violent. Mine is more on the side of keeping the people more sheeplike, not wolfish, as opposed to the violence and bloodshed in movies and stories today. Donavan, the main character, goes into a dream world one night in a cabin in the Canadian Rockies and sees his late mother and father and others, and a story unwinds in his mind, and tells him who his father really is. The saga goes from Kansas to Canada, Ireland, then Scotch Highlands. Like I said, it might be a little silly, and a little mixed up, but all in all, I think it’s good reading, especially the intimate parts.

Download or read book Culture and Redemption written by Tracy Fessenden and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Americans wish to believe that the United States, founded in religious tolerance, has gradually and naturally established a secular public sphere that is equally tolerant of all religions--or none. Culture and Redemption suggests otherwise. Tracy Fessenden contends that the uneven separation of church and state in America, far from safeguarding an arena for democratic flourishing, has functioned instead to promote particular forms of religious possibility while containing, suppressing, or excluding others. At a moment when questions about the appropriate role of religion in public life have become trenchant as never before, Culture and Redemption radically challenges conventional depictions--celebratory or damning--of America's "secular" public sphere. Examining American legal cases, children's books, sermons, and polemics together with popular and classic works of literature from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries, Culture and Redemption shows how the vaunted secularization of American culture proceeds not as an inevitable by-product of modernity, but instead through concerted attempts to render dominant forms of Protestant identity continuous with democratic, civil identity. Fessenden shows this process to be thoroughly implicated, moreover, in practices of often-violent exclusion that go to the making of national culture: Indian removals, forced acculturations of religious and other minorities, internal and external colonizations, and exacting constructions of sex and gender. Her new readings of Emerson, Whitman, Melville, Stowe, Twain, Gilman, Fitzgerald, and others who address themselves to these dynamics in intricate and often unexpected ways advance a major reinterpretation of American writing.

Book excerpt: Have you ever thrown caution to the wind and done something out of the ordinary—something to break up the monotonous and the mundane? And if so, was this choice you made so outlandish and irresponsible, were there times you felt your life was perilously hanging in the balance? Well, that’s exactly what twenty-three year old, scatterbrain extraordinaire, Cassy Carter did. In fact, that’s how this whole nightmare of an adventure begins: Hitchhiking on a dare! On a roadside nearing the hour of dusk, a young woman thumbing it for kicks and giggles, and maybe a bit more. For what happens next in these lush foothills and mountains dusted with snow, is the making of things unexpected. Things involving hellish demons, a killer copter, and a bloodthirsty drug baron. And if that doesn’t sound like enough of a risk, how about falling for the man responsible for all this craziness? Meet Jack Reynolds, an unorthodox character if there ever was one, a manly man who lives in a treehouse and eats whatever can be snared with a fishing rod or a crossbow. For Cassy soon becomes one of the snared, often wondering if she was pegged to be more than a lover—like the possible fixings for a scrumptious meal. Following a mad chase along the primitive logging trails, an accident finds the two of them at the mercy of drug-running thugs in dire want of a payday. And when it becomes apparent that Jack cannot fulfil this request, the young heroine turns into the only prize left in this deadly game of cat and mouse. For as with most people, love can play tricks and cloud judgements. With Cassy, this lingering struggle is no different. At times these feelings gave her unbound strength; when in other moments, they seemed to render her with obvious paralysis. But the question remains...would this emotion prove to be her downfall, or the precise ingredient required to make it out alive?
