Book The Early Poetry of Charles Wright

Download or read book The Early Poetry of Charles Wright written by Robert D. Denham and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-01-13 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This companion covers Charles Wright's first two trilogies, Country Music (1982) and The World of the Ten Thousand Things (1990), providing biographical details, information on Wright's sources and influences, and historical notes. It pays special attention to the way that Wright's poems work together and the links that are formed between them. While each poem is given its own commentary, the author argues that they work together in a concentrated whole to document a man's spiritual journey.

Book Cassiopeia s Quest Revelation

Download or read book Cassiopeia s Quest Revelation written by Jerry Smetzer and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-29 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cassiopeia's Quest - Revelation" is a collection of 10 short pieces of historic fiction. The 10 stories occur in chronological order, and the chronology is long... starting 100,000 years ago in east Africa in story 1, "Savanna"; to the 1860s in Scotland in Story 7, "The New World"; to sometime in the near future off Alaska's west coast in the Bering Sea Crab Fishery in Story 10, "Tree of Life". The protagonist in each story is a young woman. Though young she is exceptionally mature and intelligent as she makes her way through the events and social interactions with historic figures and other fictional characters living and working in that story's time and place. The author does not claim to be a historian but does admit to a certain enthusiasm for learning and writing about the gritty details of those times and places that show the influence of particular individuals on the evolution of what we now think of as western culture since Homo Sapiens first descended from the trees onto the limitless horizons of the grassy savanna. So, the historical facts offered in each of the stories has been intensively researched and cross-checked with the research help of a professional editor and several volunteer readers. The author is new to fiction writing and - also with the story-telling help of his very capable professional editor - his personal style is still evolving. For these 10 stories the author hopes his style comes across to the reader as "Hemingwayesque." Someday the author hopes to write as Hemingway did when he described a "clean well-lighted place." The language in the stories is mature and some is a little off-color. Among the 10 stories there are a couple of incidents that could be considered either violent or sexually provocative enough that some parental guidance may be advised for youthful readers. If these stories were a movie a rating of PG-13 may be appropriate.

Book Sailing through Cassiopeia

Download or read book Sailing through Cassiopeia written by Dan Gerber and published by Copper Canyon Press. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Dan Gerber's mastery of layered imagery and crystalline vision marry European Romanticism with American Zen. These meditative poems engage the natural landscape of California's oak savannas and memories of childhood, while calling upon an array of literary progenitors--from Robinson Jeffers and Rainer Maria Rilke to the classics of the Chinese canon--exploring what it means to be linguistically alive in an animal world. As ForeWord Magazine wrote, "Dan Gerber's poems are quick, graceful, alert to their surroundings, and rarely wasting a motion.""Gerber has a gentle touch and an unaffected, articulate voice that can be smart, funny, wise--sometimes all at the same time."--Library Journal"The thing itself carries the weight of [Gerber's] poems, which recall the deep imagery of Vallejo, Neruda, and Wright."--Rain Taxi

Book excerpt: When his lover is killed by their mob boss, a hardened criminal insider decides to pursue one last elaborate heist in an effort to rid himself of his underground lifestyle for good. Barrett Rye has always been told he can be only one thing in life: an enforcer. He's a seven-foot wall of muscle and the most effective collector in the largest criminal enterprise in the Midwest. After he realizes he wants more out of life than hurting people, he and his mob accountant boyfriend, Mickey, decide to steal enough money from their boss to disappear and start over. But they get caught, Mickey is killed, and Barrett is given one chance to pay back his debts. His plan is simple. He knows that Henry Holzmann, a small-time mafioso in Omaha, has a lead on the score of a lifetime. Barrett can't get the prize himself, but he's not trying to. He just needs a piece of it. He is going to cause so much chaos—and throw Holzmann's life into such disarray—that the man will pay him anything to make it stop. But nothing ever stays simple, and Barrett has always been too clever for his own good. As the mayhem he has seeded spirals out of control, it will take all his prodigious strength and wit to stay alive, and he'll have to decide: Does he want to win, or does he want to be the better man that he has always wanted to be?
