Book The Restoration of Latin America s Access to Voluntary Capital Market Financing

Download or read book The Restoration of Latin America s Access to Voluntary Capital Market Financing written by Mr.Mohamed A. El-Erian and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1991-08 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a prolonged and almost total reliance on debt restructurings and concerted new money facilities, several Latin American countries have, over the last two years, mobilized voluntary financing from international capital markets. Although the phenomenon is still relatively limited in terms of volume and number of borrowers, it has nevertheless attracted considerable attention. The paper reviews the nature, magnitude and terms of the market re-entry process and, by drawing upon recent country experiences, analyzes the factors that have facilitated it. This provides the basis for a discussion of the key elements affecting the short-term prospects for Latin American private and public sector voluntary debt and equity financing from international capital markets.

Book Money from the Government in Latin America

Download or read book Money from the Government in Latin America written by Maria Elisa Balen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been almost two decades since conditional cash transfer programs first appeared on the agendas of multilateral agencies and politicians. Latin America has often been used as a testing ground for these programs, which consist of transfers of money to subsections of the population upon meeting certain conditions, such as sending their children to school or having them vaccinated. Money from the Government in Latin America takes a comparative view of the effects of this regular transfer of money, which comes with obligations, on rural communities. Drawing on a variety of data, taken from different disciplinary perspectives, these chapters help to build an understanding of the place of conditional cash transfer programsin rural families and households, in individuals’ aspirations and visions, in communities’ relationships to urban areas, and in the overall character of these rural societies. With case studies from Chile, Mexico, Peru, Brazil and Colombia, this book will interest scholars and researchers of Latin American anthropology, sociology, development, economics and politics.

Book Accountability in Public Expenditures in Latin America and the Caribbean

Download or read book Accountability in Public Expenditures in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Omowunmi Ladipo and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiscal discipline and public sector efficiency became prominent issues in Latin America and the Caribbean in the late 1980's following external debt crises that troubled many countries in the region. Resolution of the debt crises necessitated a first wave of reforms that largely focused on upgrading legal and regulatory frameworks or improving information systems. Nearly twenty years later progress in matching OECD practices and performance in public financial management and procurement has been uneven and has been one of the factors that impeded higher growth and competitiveness in Latin America and the Caribbean. Countries such as Chile, Brazil and Costa Rica with relatively good performance, in this respect, have shown what other countries in the region can do and how they would benefit. Increased globalization, seemingly intractable issues of income inequality, the onset of the recent global financial crises and the emergence of an assertive middle class that demands better governance, are all reasons why Latin America and the Caribbean governments should closely examine incomplete financial management and procurement reform programs and embark on trajectories that will improve their performance and be better responsive to the needs of their citizens. This book sets out, based on more than a decade of World Bank diagnostics, key areas that remain to be addressed by governments in the Latin America and the Caribbean region to underpin sustainable arrangements that deliver efficient and effective services, which are accountable to citizens. Success will have the important additional benefit of serving to notify international financial markets of the integrity of their stewardship function.

Book Resilience in Latin America

Download or read book Resilience in Latin America written by Mr.Jose De Gregorio and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the unprecedented resilience of Latin American countries to the global financial crisis. It argues that sound macroeconomic conditions, which allowed an unusual monetary and fiscal expansion, exchange rate flexibility, a strong and well--regulated financial system, high level of reserves, and a bit of luck coming from very high terms of trade, were central to good economic performance. Persevering along the road of strong macroeconomic and financial policies is necessary, but not sufficient, to go from recovery to sustained growth.

Book Financial Integration in Latin America

Download or read book Financial Integration in Latin America written by Mr.Charles Enoch and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-04-10 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With growth slowing across much of the Latin America as a result of the end of the commodity supercycle and economic rebalancing in China, as well as fragmentation of the international banking system, policies to stimulate growth are needed. This book examines the financial landscapes of seven Latin American economies—Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Peru, and Uruguay—and makes a case for them to pursue regional financial integration. Chapters set out the benefits to the region of financial integration, the barriers to cross-border activity in banks, insurance companies, pension funds, and capital markets, as well as recommendations to address these barriers. Finally, the volume makes the case that regional integration now could be a step toward global integration in the short term.
