Download or read book Ike s Gamble written by Michael Doran and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a bold reinterpretation of history, Ike's Gamble shows how the 1956 Suez Crisis taught President Eisenhower that Israel, not Egypt, would have to be America's ally in the region. In 1956 President Nasser of Egypt moved to take possession of the Suez Canal, bringing the Middle East to the brink of war. Distinguished Middle East expert Michael Doran shows how Nasser played the United States, invoking America's opposition to European colonialism to his own benefit. At the same time Nasser made weapons deals with the USSR and destabilized other Arab countries that the United States had been courting. In time, Eisenhower would realize that Nasser had duped him and that the Arab countries were too fractious to anchor America's interests in the Middle East. Affording deep insight into Eisenhower and his foreign policy, this fascinating and provocative history provides a rich new understanding of the tangled path by which the United States became the power broker in the Middle East. -- Back cover.

Download or read book The Aliens Are Here written by Fraser A. Sherman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aliens: They have taken the form of immigrants, invaders, lovers, heroes, cute creatures that want our candy or monsters that want our flesh. For more than a century, movies and television shows have speculated about the form and motives of alien life forms. Movies first dipped their toe into the genre in the 1940s with Superman cartoons and the big screen's first story of alien invasion (1945's The Purple Monster Strikes). More aliens landed in the 1950s science fiction movie boom, followed by more television appearances (The Invaders, My Favorite Martian) in the 1960s. Extraterrestrials have been on-screen mainstays ever since. This book examines various types of the on-screen alien visitor story, featuring a liberal array of alien types, designs and motives. Each chapter spotlights a specific film or TV series, offering comparative analyses and detailing the tropes, themes and cliches and how they have evolved over time. Highlighted subjects include Eternals, War of the Worlds, The X-Files, John Carpenter's The Thing and Attack of the 50-Foot Woman.

Download or read book September Dove written by Pat Calfee and published by Author House. This book was released on 2005-10-28 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: September Dove, a must read epic, begins in 1949 on the Texas\Mexican border. Adhering to the times, and with a fifties spin on morality and work ethics, September Dove is heartwarming, sad, and humorous. Written in a narrative style that is refreshing, painfully honest, and almost primal. Gripping human experiences and bare-naked emotions are artfully exposed. An endearing storytelling triumph, that includes seldom revealed, but accurate, history lessons, from the wetback camps of the era, to the authentic practices of a Central Texas working ranch. Seen through the eyes of a young, eccentric girl, Farley Marie Sebastian, this story, has it all, unforgettable characters, a strong, thought-provoking plot, adventure, action and soul-deep love. You will bond with these people, and you will laugh and cry. Farley, a dusky beauty, is saddled with, yet strengthened by, her strict, fundamental, religious background. Plagued by many suitors, and due to a tragedy, she comes to consider her beauty a sinful curse, rather than a genetic blessing. The author clearly has an amazing grasp of humanity and remarkable descriptive abilities. The dreadful camp conditions, and the brutal ranch practices are poignantly vivid. Humor, action and interesting people and settings offer genderless appeal.

Download or read book Chained in Silence written by Talitha L. LeFlouria and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-04-27 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1868, the state of Georgia began to make its rapidly growing population of prisoners available for hire. The resulting convict leasing system ensnared not only men but also African American women, who were forced to labor in camps and factories to make profits for private investors. In this vivid work of history, Talitha L. LeFlouria draws from a rich array of primary sources to piece together the stories of these women, recounting what they endured in Georgia's prison system and what their labor accomplished. LeFlouria argues that African American women's presence within the convict lease and chain-gang systems of Georgia helped to modernize the South by creating a new and dynamic set of skills for black women. At the same time, female inmates struggled to resist physical and sexual exploitation and to preserve their human dignity within a hostile climate of terror. This revealing history redefines the social context of black women's lives and labor in the New South and allows their stories to be told for the first time.
