Book The Wreckage of My Presence

Download or read book The Wreckage of My Presence written by Casey Wilson and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Magnificent." —People Magazine The instant New York Times bestseller: Laugh-out-loud, deeply insightful, and emotion-filled essays from multitalented actress, comedian, podcaster, and writer Casey Wilson. Casey Wilson has a lot on her mind and she isn’t afraid to share. In this dazzling collection, each essay skillfully constructed and brimming with emotion, she shares her thoughts on the joys and vagaries of modern-day womanhood and motherhood, introduces the not-quite-typical family that made her who she is, and persuasively argues that lowbrow pop culture is the perfect lens through which to examine human nature. Whether she’s extolling the virtues of eating in bed, processing the humiliation over her father’s late in life perm, mourning her mother's passing, or revealing her patented method for keeping the mystery alive in a marriage, Casey is witty, candid, and full of poignant and funny surprises. Humorous dives into her obsessions and areas of personal expertise—self-help, nice guys, cool girls (not her) and how to receive visitors in the bath—are matched by touching meditations on female friendship, anger, grief, motherhood, and identity. Reading The Wreckage of My Presence is like spending time with a close friend—a deeply passionate, full-tilt, joyous, excessive, compulsive, shameless, hungry-for-it-all, loyal, cheerleading friend. A friend who is ready for any big feelings that come her way—and isn’t afraid to embrace them.

  • Author : Craig Maki
  • Publisher : University of Michigan Press
  • Release : 2013-10-11
  • ISBN : 0472052012

Download or read book Detroit Country Music written by Craig Maki and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The richness of Detroit’s music history has by now been well established. We know all about Motown, the MC5, and Iggy and the Stooges. We also know about the important part the Motor City has played in the history of jazz. But there are stories about the music of Detroit that remain untold. One of the lesser known but nonetheless fascinating histories is contained within Detroit’s country music roots. At last, Craig Maki and Keith Cady bring to light Detroit’s most important country and western and bluegrass stars, such as Chief Redbird, the York Brothers, and Roy Hall. Beyond the individuals, Maki and Cady also map out the labels, radio programs, and performance venues that sustained Detroit’s vibrant country and bluegrass music scene. In the process, Detroit Country Music examines how and why the city’s growth in the early twentieth century, particularly the southern migration tied to the auto industry, led to this vibrant roots music scene. This is the first book—the first resource of any kind—to tell the story of Detroit’s contributions to country music. Craig Maki and Keith Cady have spent two decades collecting music and images, and visiting veteran musicians to amass more than seventy interviews about country music in Detroit. Just as astounding as the book’s revelations are the photographs, most of which have never been published before. Detroit Country Music will be essential reading for music historians, record collectors, roots music fans, and Detroit music aficionados.

Book Ritual Journeys in South Asia

Download or read book Ritual Journeys in South Asia written by Christoph Bergmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the ritualized forms of mobility that constitute phenomena of pilgrimage in South Asia and establishes a new analytical framework for the study of ritual journeys. The book advances the conceptual scope of ‘classical’ Pilgrimage Studies and provides empirical depth through individual case studies. A key concern is the strategies of ritualization through which actors create, assemble and (re-)articulate certain modes of displacement to differentiate themselves from everyday forms of locomotion. Ritual journeys are understood as being both productive of and produced by South Asia’s socio-economically uneven, politically charged and culturally variegated landscapes. From various disciplinary angles, each chapter explores how spaces and movements in space are continually created, contested and transformed through ritual journeys. By focusing on this co-production of space and mobility, the book delivers a conceptually driven and empirically grounded engagement with the diverse and changing traditions of ritual journeying in South Asia. Interdisciplinary in its approach, the book is a must-have reference work for academics interested in South Asian Studies, Religious Studies, Anthropology and Human Geography with a focus on pilgrimage and the socio-spatial ideas and practices of ritualized movements in South Asia.

Download or read book Chaos written by Pannaga Shree B S & Parthvi Jaithlia and published by Spectrum Of Thoughts. This book was released on 2021-05-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaos – Tales of the heart is an Anthology that comprises two parts, each dealing with a different topic. The first part portrays several takes on “Chaos” and dives into in-depth narratives of the same. The second part brings forth “Tales of the heart” – depictions in the form of words and pictures. In the former, folks describe Chaos as they see it – Societal, Mental, Psychological, Philosophical, Circumstantial, etc. in, formal, narrative, poetic, satirical, comedic, and descriptive styles. Each author’s account gives a new perspective on how Chaotic things were, are, or can be. This section of the book focuses on matters that may not always be said out loud by most people, owing to the fear of being viewed as weak or insecure. Contrary to the immediate meaning – a physical manifestation of unrest and disorder – Chaos can erupt from within a person and still stay hidden under the surface, causing the same or more damage than its physical counterpart. This emotion can exist under the façade of calm, undetected for the most part. Chaos can make or break. It can incite action and can cease it. It can be a powerful tool if one knows how to wield it. In the latter, people pour their hearts out in the form of fables, poems, and pictures. They talk about personal and social aspects of how the heart perceives things. This section of the book also renders the adage “A picture is worth a thousand words” with moments captured to perfection by budding photographers. Talking about how one’s feeling, can prove easier said than done. Societal conceptions of what should and shouldn’t be talked about can seriously maim one’s self-confidence to the point where one simply stops talking altogether. More often than not, pictures and photos are judged based on how beautiful and perfect they are rather than what they are trying to illustrate. While the former approach isn’t entirely wrong, it does, however, impose unrealistic restrictions on what “beauty” should be. The heart can be made light and airy, metaphorically speaking, provided one finds a way to lighten the load it bears.

Book In the Shadow of Illness

Download or read book In the Shadow of Illness written by Myra Bluebond-Langner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing account of how families adapt to living with a chronically ill child What is it like to live with a child who has a chronic, life-threatening disease? What impact does the illness have on well siblings in the family? Myra Bluebond-Langner suggests that understanding the impact of the illness lies not in identifying deficiencies in the lives of those affected, but in appreciating how family members carry on with their lives in the face of the disease's intrusion. The Private Worlds of Dying Children, Bluebond-Langner's previous book, now considered a classic in the field, explored the world of terminally ill children. In her new book, she turns her attention to the lives of those who live in the shadow of chronic illness: the parents and well siblings of children who have cystic fibrosis. Through a series of narrative portraits, she draws us into the daily lives of nine families of children at different points in the natural history of the illness—from diagnosis through the terminal phase. In these portraits, as family members talk about their experiences in their own words, we see how parents, well siblings, and the ill children themselves struggle, in different ways, to contain the intrusion of the disease into their lives. Bluebond-Langner looks at how parents adjust their priorities and their idea of what constitutes a normal life, how they try to balance the needs of other family members while caring for the ill child, and how they see the future. This context helps us understand how well siblings view the illness and how they relate to their ill sibling and parents. Since the issues raised are not unique to cystic fibrosis but are common to other chronic and life-threatening illnesses, this book will be of interest to all who study, care for, or live with the seriously ill.

The quake’s effects are personal for Iris, but not for seismologist Casey Radnor. Casey is a scientist above all else, logical and disconnected from the natural disasters she studies. When she rescues a stray dog from some rubble, she finds herself caught up in the lives of Iris and the others affected by the quake, despite her best efforts to remain professional. The beautiful San Juan Islands in Washington State become the epicenter of both the earthquake and the collision of Iris's and Casey’s hearts. Can love bind the shattered fragments together again?
