Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tuscany's Casentino and Valtiberina Valleys An Area Steeped in History and Religious Significance This guidebook takes you to some of the least visited, yet most beautiful, sites in Central Tuscany in the valleys of the Casentino and Valtiberina. The Casentino is a heavily forested area in the mountains with great historical and religious. The area was the site of several battles between Guelfs, including Florence, and Ghibillines, including Arezzo. The Camaldoli monastery and hermitage were founded by St. Romualdo. St. Francis of Assisi founded the Sanctuary of La Verna, where he received the stigmata. The Valtiberina is almost the eastern border of Tuscany with artistic and historical significance from the middle ages. The birth home of Michelangelo is in Caprese. Anghiari is a small town that was the site of a medieval battle. In the Casentino . . . Though Stia is barely large enough for a map, it has an outstanding wool museum tracing the use of wool as fabric through the centuries. Explore the extraordinarily well-preserved castle and town of Poppi. Find the secluded and peaceful Camaldoli Monastery and Hermitage and hermitage high in the mountains surrounded by forests. Bring a jacket. Visit St. Francis's Santuario della Verna where he received the stigmata and slept on a rock ledge in a cave. In the Valtiberina . . . Walk all through the tiny medieval town of Anghiari perched on the side of the mountain with no traffic. Stop at the museum of the Battle of Anghiari to learn about the area and the lost fresco of Leonardo da Vinci. Walk among modern sculptures in the garden at the home where Michelangelo was born in Caprese Michelangelo. Visit old, flat, pedestrian free Sansepolcro with its collection of interesting churches and beautiful Civic Museum with several Piero della Francesca masterpieces. Examine Piero della Francesca's restored fresco of Madonna del Parto in Monterchi. Book Features: Authentic recipes from my Italian cousins. GPS coordinates to sites. He takes you through lesser-known villages and churches in the same detail that the big commercial guides provide for the usual must-sees, so that you come to understand what a cultural wealth is to be found in even the most out-of-the-way places. The guiding is interspersed with historical information, recipes, and helpful tips for enjoying your time in Tuscany."

Download or read book Landscapes and Societies written by I. Peter Martini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-09 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains case histories intended to show how societies and landscapes interact. The range of interest stretches from the small groups of the earliest Neolithic, through Bronze and Iron Age civilizations, to modern nation states. The coexistence is, of its very nature reciprocal, resulting in changes in both society and landscape. In some instances the adaptations may be judged successful in terms of human needs, but failure is common and even the successful cases are ephemeral when judged in the light of history. Comparisons and contrasts between the various cases can be made at various scales from global through inter-regional, to regional and smaller scales. At the global scale, all societies deal with major problems of climate change, sea-level rise, and with ubiquitous problems such as soil erosion and landscape degradation. Inter-regional differences bring out significant detail with one region suffering from drought when another suffers from widespread flooding. For example, desertification in North Africa and the Near East contrasts with the temperate countries of southern Europe where the landscape-effects of deforestation are more obvious. And China and Japan offer an interesting comparison from the standpoint of geological hazards to society - large, unpredictable and massively erosive rivers in the former case, volcanoes and accompanying earthquakes in the latter. Within the North African region localized climatic changes led to abandonment of some desertified areas with successful adjustments in others, with the ultimate evolution into the formative civilization of Egypt, the "Gift of the Nile". At a smaller scale it is instructive to compare the city-states of the Medieval and early Renaissance times that developed in the watershed of a single river, the Arno in Tuscany, and how Pisa, Siena and Florence developed and reached their golden periods at different times depending on their location with regard to proximity to the sea, to the main trunk of the river, or in the adjacent hills. Also noteworthy is the role of technology in opening up opportunities for a society. Consider the Netherlands and how its history has been formed by the technical problem of a populous society dealing with too much water, as an inexorably rising sea threatens their landscape; or the case of communities in Colorado trying to deal with too little water for farmers and domestic users, by bringing their supply over a mountain chain. These and others cases included in the book, provide evidence of the successes, near misses and outright failures that mark our ongoing relationship with landscape throughout the history of Homo sapiens. The hope is that compilations such as this will lead to a better understanding of the issue and provide us with knowledge valuable in planning a sustainable modus vivendi between humanity and landscape for as long as possible. Audience: The book will interest geomorphologists, geologists, geographers, archaeologists, anthropologists, ecologists, environmentalists, historians and others in the academic world. Practically, planners and managers interested in landscape/environmental conditions will find interest in these pages, and more generally the increasingly large body of opinion in the general public, with concerns about Planet Earth, will find much to inform their opinions. Book Southern Europe in the Mediterranean Context

Download or read book Southern Europe in the Mediterranean Context written by Eric Vaz and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the process of Southern Europe's integration in the European Union, the Mediterranean region has seen a more considerable gap between central and northern European countries and its Southern European counterpart. Thus, in a European context of social cohesion, it becomes necessary to better understand Southern Europe, without escaping to the common perception of the complexity of Mediterranean culture. As a significant player throughout history, Southern Europe consistently established a platform of diversity and freedom, bringing peace between different historic-cultural traditions. Moreover, the southern frontier of Europe to Africa and Asia has become a crucial determinant in the current times of change.
