This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Institute for Amorphous Studies was founded in 1982 as the international center for the investigation of amorphous mate rials. It has since played an important role in promoting the und er standing of disordered matter in general. An Institute lecture series on "Fundamentals of Amorphous Materials and Devices" was held during 1982-83 with distinguished speakers from universities and industry. These events were free and open to the public ,and were attended by many representatives of the scientific community. The lectures themselves were highly successful inasmuch as they provided not only formal instruction but also an opportunity for vigorous and stimulating debate. That last element could not be captured within the pages of a book I but the lectures concentrated on the latest advances in the field I which is why their essential contents are he re reproduced in collective form. Together they constitute an interdisciplinary status report of the field. The speakers brought many different viewpoints and a variety of back ground experiences io bear on the problems involved I but though language and conventions vary I the essential unity of the concerns is very clear I as indeed are the ultimate benefits of the many-sided approach.

Book Introduction to Chemical Reaction Engineering and Kinetics

Download or read book Introduction to Chemical Reaction Engineering and Kinetics written by Ronald W. Missen and published by New York ; Toronto : J. Wiley. This book was released on 1999 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solving problems in chemical reaction engineering and kinetics is now easier than ever! As students read through this text, they'll find a comprehensive, introductory treatment of reactors for single-phase and multiphase systems that exposes them to a broad range of reactors and key design features. They'll gain valuable insight on reaction kinetics in relation to chemical reactor design. They will also utilize a special software package that helps them quickly solve systems of algebraic and differential equations, and perform parameter estimation, which gives them more time for analysis. Key Features Thorough coverage is provided on the relevant principles of kinetics in order to develop better designs of chemical reactors. E-Z Solve software, on CD-ROM, is included with the text. By utilizing this software, students can have more time to focus on the development of design models and on the interpretation of calculated results. The software also facilitates exploration and discussion of realistic, industrial design problems. More than 500 worked examples and end-of-chapter problems are included to help students learn how to apply the theory to solve design problems. A web site, www.wiley.com/college/missen, provides additional resources including sample files, demonstrations, and a description of the E-Z Solve software.

Book The New Political Islam

Download or read book The New Political Islam written by Emmanuel Karagiannis and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explains how various Islamists have endorsed human rights, democracy, and justice to gain influence and mobilize supporters Islamist political parties and groups are on the rise throughout the Muslim world and in Muslim communities in the West. Owing largely to the threat of terrorism, political Islam is often portrayed as a monolithic movement embodying fundamentalism and theocracy, an image magnified by the rise of populism and xenophobia in the United States and Europe. Reality, however, is far more complicated. Political Islam has evolved considerably since its spectacular rise decades ago, and today it features divergent viewpoints and contributes to discrete but simultaneous developments worldwide. This is a new political Islam, more global in scope but increasingly local in action. Emmanuel Karagiannis offers a sophisticated analysis of the different manifestations of contemporary Islamism. In a context of global economic and social changes, he finds local manifestations of Islamism are becoming both more prevalent and more diverse. Many Islamists turn to activism, still more participate formally in the democratic process, and some, in far fewer numbers, advocate violence—a wide range of political persuasions and tactics that reflects real and perceived political, cultural, and identity differences. Synthesizing prodigious research and integrating insights from the globalization debate and the literature on social movements, The New Political Islam seeks to explain the processes and factors leading to distinctive fusions of "the global" and "the local" across the landscape of contemporary political Islam. Examining converts to Islam in Europe, nonviolent Islamists with global reach, Islamist parties in Turkey, Egypt, and Tunisia, and militant Shia and Sunni groups in Syria and Iraq, Karagiannis demonstrates that Islamists have embraced ideas and practices from the global marketplace and have attempted to implement them locally. He looks closely at the ways in which Islamist activists, politicians, and militants have utilized the language of human rights, democracy, and justice to gain influence and popular support and to contend for power.

Book Landmark Papers in Neurosurgery

Download or read book Landmark Papers in Neurosurgery written by Reuben D. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence-based medicine is a concept that has come to the fore in the past few years. Clinicians are increasingly encouraged to practise patient management based on available evidence in the scientific literature. For example, new pharmacological therapies are only used when large randomized trials have 'proven' that a particular drug is better than existing ones. This is also the case in surgical specialties, although surgery has traditionally seen a lack of useof this information, with individual surgeon's preferences being most influential in treatment choices. However, more recently, there has been a large expansion of trials and studies aimed at providingsurgeons with information to guide their choices using firm evidence. This new edition has been revised and expanded to include new data where relevant, and also features a new chapter on pituitary surgery. Landmark Papers in Neurosurgery 2e remains a key collection of the most important trials and studies in neurosurgery, allowing the reader to rapidly extract key results, and making it essential reading for all neurosurgeons and trainees in the field.
