Book Deer Overabundance on a University Campus

Download or read book Deer Overabundance on a University Campus written by Ryan D. Hubbard and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many suburban areas have seen dramatic increases in local white-tailed deer ( Odocoileus virginianus ) populations during the last 20 years due to high-quality habitat, few predators, and protection from hunting. Human-wildlife conflicts associated with overabundant suburban deer populations include deer-vehicle collisions, ornamental plant damage, and concerns about zoonotic diseases. During the fawning seasons (May-June) of 2005 and 2006, 13 confirmed incidences of female deer attacking humans occurred on the campus of Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). These attacks plus additional deer-human conflicts on and around SIUC property has spurred the administration to consider deer management. I modeled 2 types of managed shotgun hunts, a replacement hunt and a non-replacement hunt, for SIUC for fall 2008. I used a GIS to determine hunter numbers and placement on the landscape, and I modeled population growth of deer using an accounting-based model from spring 2007 to fall 2008. I also estimated optimal season length and the costs and benefits of the 2 managed shotgun hunt types. The non-replacement hunt was less expensive overall and had a lower cost/day, but a replacement hunt was more cost-efficient (cost/deer/day) and could meet higher population reduction goals. The type of hunt potentially chosen by SIUC administration will depend on management objectives and the tradeoffs among cost, effectiveness and total harvest

Book Efficacy of a Controlled Hunt for Managing White tailed Deer on Fair Hill Natural Resource Management Area Cecil County Maryland

Download or read book Efficacy of a Controlled Hunt for Managing White tailed Deer on Fair Hill Natural Resource Management Area Cecil County Maryland written by Regina L. Ebersole and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As exurbia becomes more dominant in our landscape, the number of deer populations in parklands surrounded by housing increases and creates new challenges in deer management. Traditional harvest regimes often are not possible in areas with heavy human use. Instead, many managers use controlled hunts to reduce deer populations. I studied the efficacy of a 2-day shotgun controlled hunt on a section of Fair Hill Natural Resource Management Area, Cecil County, Maryland. Starting in February 2004, we captured and tagged 158 deer, and radio-collared 62 does. Survival rate of adult does was 0.66 with harvest as the most prominent mortality cause (85.7%), followed by deer auto collisions (14.3%). I conducted spotlight surveys to determine deer density (48 deer/km2), adult sex ratio (5.3 does/buck, SE = 1.452), and fawn-doe ratio (0.88 fawns/doe, SE = 0.0537). I collected reproductive data from does harvested during the controlled hunts in 2005 and 2006. The average fecundity for adults, yearlings, and fawns were 1.76, 1.44, and 0.06 fetuses/doe, respectively. To examine the effect of the controlled hunt, I created a female-based population model, which included age-structured fecundity and survival rates. The model indicated a declining population (average lambda = 0.872) with the 2004 adult doe survival rate (0.56, SE = 0.074) and an increasing population (average lambda = 1.069) with the 2005 survival rate (0.74, SE = 0.068), but indicated the Fair Hill NRMA deer population was relatively stable (average lambda = 0.981) with the pooled survival rate from both years (0.66, SE = 0.069). I recommend ways to increase the efficiency of the controlled hunts to consistently increase doe mortality and decrease deer abundance.

Book Case Studies in Environmental Archaeology

This book was released on 2008 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights studies addressing significant anthropological issues in the Americas from the perspective of environmental archaeology. The book uses case studies to resolve questions related to human behavior in the past rather than to demonstrate the application of methods. Each chapter is an original or revised work by an internationally-recognized scientist. This second edition is based on the 1996 book of the same title. The editors have invited back a number of contributors from the first edition to revise and update their chapter. New studies are included in order to cover recent developments in the field or additional pertinent topics.

Book Spatial Ecology and Responses to a Controlled Hunt of Female White tailed Deer in an Exurban Park

Download or read book Spatial Ecology and Responses to a Controlled Hunt of Female White tailed Deer in an Exurban Park written by Craig L. Rhoads and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have adapted to and thrive in highly fragmented exurban habitats. Consequently, managers face new challenges dealing with deer population control in areas where traditional harvest regimes may no longer be practical or effective. Little is known about exurban deer ecology or about deer responses to controlled hunts, the latter of which is the most common method used for exurban deer population control. My study investigated spatial ecology and responses to controlled hunts of an exurban deer population residing on Fair Hill Natural Resource Management Area in Cecil County, Maryland. Fair Hill is an exurban park bordered by residential development and agricultural areas, and serves as a potential source for deer-human conflicts. From June 2004--January 2006, I collected approximately 37,000 telemetry locations on 66 collared female white-tailed deer to investigate seasonal home range sizes, home range fidelity, and hourly movement rates. Additionally, I monitored all deer before, during, and after a controlled shotgun hunt to investigate deer responses to hunting pressure. Average adaptive kernel home range sizes ranged from 8.1 ha--21.7 ha and 70.9 ha--144.5 ha among seasons at the 50% and 95% spatial scales, respectively. Average home range sizes followed a general increasing trend from the fawning through post-hunting season. Seasonal home range overlap differed by season at the 50% and 95% spatial scales, with the least overlap occurring between the post-hunting and fawning seasons (50%: x¯ = 19.4%, 95%: x¯ = 33.3%). Circadian activity rates varied among seasons, with dusk movements being greatest in all seasons. Average diurnal activity was greatest during the middle (1 Oct--30 Nov; x¯ = 65.7 m/hr) and late (1 Dec--31 Jan; x¯ = 67.8 m/hr) seasons and least during the post-hunting (1 Feb--30 Apr; x¯ = 46.2 m/hr). I found significant spatial and temporal responses of white-tailed deer to hunting pressure. Deer in non-refuge areas moved significantly more during (x¯ = 560.1 m) than either before (x¯ = 382.5 m) or after (x¯ = 417.5 m) the controlled hunts, whereas movement of deer in refuge areas did not change in response to the controlled hunt. Onstand and off-stand movements, defined as movements occurring while hunters were onstand or off-stand respectively, were greater in non-refuge (x¯ = 408.9 m and x¯ = 456.4 m) than refuge (x¯ = 261.2m and x¯ = 307.4 m) areas. Increased use of refuge areas in response to the controlled hunt resulted in a 20%--25% decrease in the percentage of deer available for harvest after the hunt. Consequently, only 50% of monitored deer remained available for harvest by the end of the hunt. My results suggest that to increase the efficacy of the current controlled hunt design at Fair Hill, managers should attempt to eliminate areas currently serving as refuge areas and consider changing hunt hours to include the dusk activity period.
