Book The Syntax of Case and Agreement in Standard Arabic

Download or read book The Syntax of Case and Agreement in Standard Arabic written by Adil Saeed Alsubhi and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates Case assignment and subject-verb agreement in Standard Arabic. 'It discusses the assignment of default, structural and inherent Case in Arabic and provides a new analysis of subject-verb agreement based on the Minimal Feature Syntax of Sigurosson (2004). The key assumption is that Case assignment and agreement relations are realised by unrelated tokens of Agree. The thesis is composed of six chapters. The first chapter comprises the introduction and presents a rationale for the topic chosen, an outline of the thesis and the sources of the data discussed in the following chapters. The second chapter presents the background of the thesis and falls into two main sections. The first section introduces the descriptive background discussing the permissible word orders in Arabic, the patterns of subject-verb agreement and the morphological realization of Gender, Number, Case, and Definiteness as well as the forms of personal and demonstrative pronouns. The second section presents the theoretical background and discusses the introduction of features in syntax and the syntactic operations, Merge and Agree. The third chapter investigates the syntax of the left periphery. In its first section, the chapter discusses CLLD topics in Arabic and their Case marking. The chapter argues that a CLLD topic can be assigned either structural accusative Case by a finite complementiser, or nominative Case by default in the absence of any overt Case assigner. It is also posited that the assignment of structural Case is limited to the highest topic in structures with multiple CLLD topics. The second section discusses fronted focus phrases and argues that the ban on fronted focus phrases as to not occur immediately after a finite complementiser can be accounted for in terms of the defective intervention effect of Chomsky (2000, 2001). In its third section, the chapter discusses double complementiser structures in Arabic and argues that ?inna can merge in the structure either as the head Force of ForceP or as the head Fin of FinP, an analysis which provides support for the CP-Split Hypothesis of Rizzi (1997) in general and the structure used in this chapter for analysing CLLD topics and fronted focus phrases in particular. The fourth chapter investigates subject-verb agreement and the assignment of structural nominative Case in Arabic. It argues that the patterns of subject-verb agreement available in Arabic can be accounted for by adopting a structure in which each agreement phi-feature projects its own maximal projection. The fact that a postverbal subject can raise to a preverbal position and consequently get assigned structural accusative Case by a complementiser is linked to the absence of the expletive grammatical subject in the specifier of T which renders T unable to assign its structural Case. This postulation embodies two key assumptions; the first is that the assignment of nominative Case is not a reflex of the valuation of the agreement features, and the second is that Burzio's (1986) generalisation can be extended from the functional head v to the functional head T. The fifth chapter discusses the assignment of Case in double object constructions. It is argued that the lexical head V assigns inherent accusative Case either to its direct object or its indirect object. This optional assignment is posited to determine which DP object serves as the subject of the corresponding passive. The sixth chapter is a conclusion presenting a summary of the main findings of this thesis and the scope of further research.

Book Thematic Structure and Para Syntax Arabic as a Case Study

Download or read book Thematic Structure and Para Syntax Arabic as a Case Study written by James Dickins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thematic Structure and Para-Syntax: Arabic as a Case Study presents a structural analysis of Arabic, providing an alternative to the traditional notions of theme and rheme. Taking Arabic as a case study, this book claims that approaches to thematic structure propounded in universalist linguistic theories, of which Hallidayan systemic functional linguistics is taken as an illustrative example, are profoundly wrong. It argues that in order to produce an analysis of thematic structure and similar phenomena which is not undermined by its own theoretical presuppositions, it is necessary to remove such notions from the domain of linguistic and semiotic theory. The book initially focuses on Sudanese Arabic, because this allows for a beautifully clear exposition of general principles, before applying these principles to Modern Standard Arabic, and some other Arabic varieties. This book will be of interest to scholars in Arabic linguistics, linguistic theory, and information structure.

Book Case in Standard Arabic The Untraveled Paths

Download or read book Case in Standard Arabic The Untraveled Paths written by Rashid Ali Al-Balushi and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis proposes a novel theory to account for the structural Case facts in Standard Arabic (SA). It argues that structural Nom and Acc Cases are licensed by Verbal Case (VC). Thus it argues against the proposal that structural Case in SA is licensed as a reflex of &phgr;-agreement (Schutze 1997 and Chomsky 2001 crosslinguistically, and Soltan 2007 for SA), and also against the view that structural Case is a [uT] feature on the DP (Pesetsky & Torrego 2001, 2004). After arguing against these two approaches, it is shown that verbless sentences, where the verb is not licensed (by VC), do not witness the licensing of structural Case. Thus verbless sentences provide a context where verbs are not licensed, similar to the embedded subject position of control verbs like 'try' (where lexical DPs are not licensed). Investigation of the SA verbal system reveals that SA verbs are licensed through Case checking/assignment by verbal particles. Thus, like DPs, verbs receive a form of Case, which I call VC, represented as unvalued [VC] features on I0 and v*0. Since the VC-assigning particles are Comp elements, I propose that [VC] is valued on I0 and v*0 by a valued [VC] feature on Fin0 (via Agree), which enables I0 and v*0 to value the [Case] features on the subject and object as Nom and Acc, respectively. Thus the DP is licensed by the same feature that licenses the verb, which is VC. Given the observation that [T], [&phgr;], and [Mood] do not license Case in SA, I argue for two types of finiteness, Infl-finiteness, related to [T], [Mood], and [&phgr;], and Comp-finiteness, related to [VC]. To account for the Case facts in various SA sentence types, I propose that Fin0 has a [VC] feature iff it selects an XP that has (at least) one I-finiteness feature ([T], [Mood], [&phgr;]) and a categorial [V] feature.

Book A Linguistic History of Arabic

Download or read book A Linguistic History of Arabic written by Jonathan Owens and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-05-11 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Linguistic History of Arabic presents a reconstruction of proto-Arabic by the methods of historical-comparative linguistics. It challenges the traditional conceptualization of an old, Classical language evolving into the contemporary Neo-Arabic dialects. Professor Owens combines established comparative linguistic methodology with a careful reading of the classical Arabic sources, such as the grammatical and exegetical traditions. He arrives at a richer and more complex picture of early Arabic language history than is current today and in doing so establishes the basis for a comprehensive, linguistically-based understanding of the history of Arabic. The arguments are set out in a concise, case by case basis, making it accessible to students and scholars of Arabic and Islamic culture, as well as to those studying Arabic and historical linguists.

Book Subject Theme and Agent in Modern Standard Arabic

Download or read book Subject Theme and Agent in Modern Standard Arabic written by Hussein Abdul-Raof and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigates the universal categories 'subject', 'theme', and 'agent' with special reference to their functional status in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and how these three distinct functions may or may not coincide in Arabic sentences. These functions are inexplicitly characterised by classical and modern Arab linguists and Arabists alike. It has been found that the pre- (viz. sentence - initial) or post-verbal noun phrase (NP) in Arabic can be assigned the syntactic function 'subject' but may not necessarily assume the semantic function 'agent', that the pre-verbal NP, which may not necessarily be the 'subject', has the pragmatic function 'theme', and that these distinct functions sometimes cluster around a single NP in certain sentences, depending on genre. It has also been found that in MSA the order of sentence constituents is relatively free, subject to a verb-initial preference, especially when needed to prevent ambiguity. The present study reveals the fact that although coding features such as word order, case marking, and cross-referencing (viz. agreement) may provide a clear indication of which NPs are 'subjects' in MSA, they do not provide a clear-cut indication of semantic relations such as 'agent'; the 'subject' position in MSA is not necessarily the canonical 'agent' position.

Download or read book Case in Standard Arabic written by Amer M. Th Ahmed and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is concerned with how structural and non-structural cases are assigned in the variety of Arabic known in the literature as Standard Arabic (SA). Taking a Minimalist perspective, this dissertation shows that the available generative accounts of case in SA are problematic either theoretically or empirically. It is argued that these problems can be overcome using the hybrid dependent case theory of Baker (2015). This theory makes a distinction between two types of phases. The first is the hard phase, which disallows the materials inside from being accessed by higher phases. The second is the soft phase, which allows the materials inside it to be accessed by higher phases. The results of this dissertation indicate that in SA (a) the CP is a hard phase in that noun phrases inside this phase are inaccessible to higher phases for the purpose of case assignment. In contrast, vP is argued to be a soft phase in that the noun phrases inside this phase are still accessible to higher phases for the purposes of case assignment (b) the DP, and the PP are also argued to be hard phases in SA, (c) case assignment in SA follows a hierarchy such that lexical case applies before the dependent case, the dependent case applies before the Agree-based case assignment, the Agree-based case assignment applies before the unmarked/default case assignment, (d) case assignment in SA is determined by a parameter, which allows the dependent case assignment to apply to a noun phrase if it is c-commanded by another noun phrase in the same Spell-Out domain (TP or VP), (e) the rules of dependent case assignment require that the NPs involved have distinct referential indices. The major conclusion of the dissertation is that the functional head v in SA is a soft phase head, due to its deficient -specification. That is why it is incapable of establishing an Agree relation with the object and assigning the structural accusative case to it. The structural accusative case on the object is, therefore, always the result of the dependent case mechanism.

Book The Grammar of Focus

Download or read book The Grammar of Focus written by Georges Rebuschi and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The grammar of focus has been studied in generative grammar from its inception. It has been the subject of intense, detailed cross-linguistic investigation for over 20 years, particularly within the Principles and Parameters framework. It is appropriate at this point, therefore, to take stock. Appraisal at this particular point is all the more legitimate because it comes at a time of general evaluation of the results of the profound activity that has characterized the Principles and Parameters framework. This general assessment has produced a radical new direction within that framework. The volume starts off with an introductory chapter that aims to provide an outline for the assessment, to be followed by an overview of the evolution of the study of focus in generative grammar, and a recapitulation of the principal issues associated with focus. These issues are taken up in the remaining chapters of the book, where various grammatical means of marking focus (as well as grammaticalization of focus marking) are analyzed in a wide variety of languages.
