Download or read book The History of Hardening written by Hans Berns and published by Härterei Gerster AG. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present needs the past to shape the future. As in many areas of life, heat treatments used in the past have to be studied to understand the present. The resulting conclusions can be used to shape the future. But how did heat treatment develop into a key branch of the economy in spite of its initial inadequacies? This question is the subject of this book, written by Professor Emeritus Dr.-Ing. Hans Berns and published by Härterei Gerster AG. It begins with the production of sponge iron in a bloomery hearth during the pre-Christian era and its subsequent carburisation as an essential requirement for hardening. During the Modern Period, in contrast, the high carbon content of the crude iron had to be painstakingly reduced to a level that allowed forging and hardening. The invention of mild steel in 1856 brought alloyed steels that could be hardened with thicker cross-sections, thus laying the foundations for modern hardening techniques. Härterei Gerster AG, a family business, has become the leading Swiss specialist for technical heat treatments mainly due to ongoing development cooperation with a number of academic institutions. Various development projects established a friendly relationship between Härterei Gerster AG and Prof. Hans Berns.

Book Heat treatment of Steel

Download or read book Heat treatment of Steel written by Erik Oberg and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1914 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amply illustrated and deeply detailed, this classic guide details the creation of grades of steel via heat treatments. It offers fascinating insight into metal manufacturing processes. Since this guidebook was published in 1914, it carries a certain historic value; at the time, the United States economy was undergoing industrialization. Steel was in high demand, and the technology behind its manufacture was improved upon greatly. The metal's importance could not be understated; the expanding rail networks, new multistory constructions, plus tools and factory machines all required huge quantities of quality metal. As we learn, steel is not a simple product: various grades must be achieved via subtle variations in the heat and techniques applied during its manufacture. To articulate his points, the author appends over ninety charts and diagrams of equipment. Together these show how the furnaces work, and how the hardness of the metal is varied to meet strict specifications. Certain intense processes receive their own chapter, such as steel for machine tools and the use of the electric furnace, plus alloys and the testing of the finished products. For its breadth of detail and superb understanding, Erik Oberg's work remains readable over a century since its original publication.
