Book excerpt: This book is an extensively revised version of the core part of my 1993 MIT doctoral dissertation, which seeks to provide a Minimalist theory of Case absorption and support it through empirical investigation. The central idea pursued is that impoverishment of phrase structure is responsible for Case absorption and that the right theory of Case checking should derive this property. Although the basic line of research on Case absorption and wh-agreement remains the same, this book incorporates a lot of new results. A principied theory of Case checking and Case absorption has been worked out in Chapter 1. Treatment of participial constructions in Chapter 3 and wh agreement in Chapter 4 is far more systematic and comprehensive. Chapter 2 is also streamlined, together with refinements of the analysis of Romanian. The product, I hope, is a more convincing def ense of the strength of the Mi ni mal ist approach. Case Absorption and WH- Agreement is also the first systematic attempt to put a tight constraint on WH-agreement, surveying a wide range of phenomena discussed in the literature to show that despite the superficial morpho-syntactic multiplicity of its realization, WH-agreement is highly restricted because it arises through the interaction between case theory and A-bar processes. This book targets researchers who are interested in the latest developments in the principles-and-parameters approach, as well as those who want to understand central issues in the theory of A-movement.

The author works within the Minimalist Program of syntactic theory. Adjunct Control is a relation of co-referentiality between two subjects, one in the matrix clause and one in the adjunct clause of the same structure. The relevant adjuncts in Assamese are non-finite clauses commonly known as Conjunctive Participle (CNP) clauses. Four types of Adjunct Control are examined: (i) Forward Control, in which only the matrix subject is pronounced; (ii) Backward Control, in which only the subordinate subject is pronounced; (iii) Copy Control, in which both subjects are pronounced; and (iv) Expletive Control, in which case the two control elements are expletives. While Forward Control is a cross-linguistically common control pattern, Assamese also allows the other three less common structures. The author analyzes Adjunct Control as movement and provides a detailed account of the conditions that drive and constrain each of the four types of control. The theoretical implications are highlighted. The book is unique both empirically and theoretically. It is the first monograph which deals with Assamese generative syntax. It is also the first book to explore control structures in a single understudied language in such detail. In addition to Assamese, the book provides data from Telugu, Bengali, Konkani, Marathi, Tamil, and Hindi.

As a contribution to fill this gap, this volume congregates recent work that deals with empirical and conceptual consequences of the copy theory of movement for the inner working of syntactic computations within the Minimalist Program, with special emphasis on the syntaxphonology mapping.

Neeleman and Weerman take issue with this view, arguing for a more flexible approach on the basis of conceptual considerations and data taken mostly, but not exclusively, from the Germanic languages. In-depth analyses of word order phenomena as well as diachronic and typological generalizations motivate a re-evaluation of the role of case in the projection of arguments. Case is shown to provide a syntactic foothold for thematic interpretation, something which is necessary in a grammar that does not allow fixed theta-positions. Thus, this study does not only offer a genuine alternative to many standard assumptions, it also explains why there should be such a thing as case in natural language.

Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed study and a novel Minimalist account of copular sentences in Russian, focusing on case marking alternations (nominative vs. instrumental) and drawing a distinction between two types of copular sentences. On the assumption that Merge is defined in the simplest way possible, it is argued that not all syntactic structures are a(nti)symmetrical. One of the copular sentence types is analyzed as a poster child for symmetrical structures, while the other type is treated as asymmetrical. The originality of this study lies in treating the copula in the two types of copular sentences neither as completely identical nor as two distinct lexical items; instead, the two types of copula are derived through the process of semantic bleaching. Furthermore, it is argued that the two types of the copula need to combine with post-copular phrases of different categories. It is concluded that Russian draws a distinction between saturated DPs and unsaturated NPs, in spite of its renowned lack of overt articles.
