The results of these tests were compared with the performance data of the actual turbine. The comparison showed that profile and mixing losses, though not negligible, constitute only a small percentage of the overall rotor loss. Also, the inlet flow angle at which the minimum loss occurred for the Cascade flow was significantly different from the inlet flow angle at which minimum actual rotor loss occurred.

The tests were performed at the Rectilinear Cascade Test Facility of the Turbo-Propulsion Laboratories of the Department of Aeronautics, Naval Postgraduate School. The results were compared with the predicted losses from various formulas that have been proposed in the technical literature. The comparison showed that most formulas predict a secondary loss that is about ten times as high as that determined in the present tests. Photographs were obtained of the boundary layer traces by the use of lamp black coating. These photographs show the effects of secondary flows on the performance of a cascade. (Author).

Book excerpt: The method of turbine performance prediction developed by Vavra and Eckert has been refined in this analysis to realize more of the potential of the three-dimensional calculating methods. Mach number and rotor tip clearance effects on blade outlet angles and loss coefficients have been localized rather than averaged over the blade height. An approximation for streamline curvature has been used. Performance curves were determined for two single stage axial-flow turbines. Test results were available for one of the turbines. Agreement between predicted and experimental performance values was generally within 3 per cent. (Author).
