Much has been written about new methods and organizations that are likely to develop economically competitive and creative capacities in companies. The work of “innovation professionals” is truly difficult to observe because of its very nature (intangible work done over a long period of time), its inaccessibility, and its status. The purpose of this book is to put forward a number of keys for understanding the ongoing dynamics for working professionals in the field of innovation. Examining reorganizations in both large-scale firms and start-ups, the authors explore diverse sectors such as hi-tech, consumer goods and equipment, chemistry, aeronautics as well as upstream companies working for subsidiaries and traditional small-scale production such. The result is to show a world of networks where a large-scale firm undertakes research in partnership with a start-up, develops its products with independent designers and involves upstream suppliers in its developments. Also analyzed are the industrial strategies, the organizational conditions of product conception, and the dynamics of the professional identities of the actors who are at the core of these transformations. As part of the Foundation’s multifaceted activities—which range from seminars and an advanced training initiative for French doctoral students to joint programs with international organizations an associations—FNEGE partnered with ISEOR to sponsor a series of workshops on developing high quality intervention-research. This volume is one of the results from that endeavor. Although intervention-research helps to uncover valuable insight into organizational dynamics and performance, the challenge of capturing and disseminating that insight to both academics and practitioners is entrenched in the rigor-relevance debate. While we are witnessing increased calls for “actionable knowledge,” this ideal, unfortunately, remains a rather elusive concept as critics contend either that rigorous academic research falls well-short of relevance to the practitioner world or research that proves to be valuable to practitioners falls short of the rigor expected in academic life. This volume is intended to help bridge that divide. Pour mener ces réflexions, les Académies ont fait appel aussi bien à des intervenants issus du monde de l'industrie qu'à des chercheurs et universitaires, mais également à des représentants de cabinets de brevets, de l'Office européen des brevets et de la Commission européenne. D'élément d'une stratégie d'entreprise à une stratégie d'État, le droit des brevets, souvent encore national, est confronté à cette économie mondialisée. De celle-ci découle également la multiplication des acteurs intervenant dans ce champ d'action traditionnellement restreint aux relations entre inventeurs et employeurs d'une part, brevetés et licenciés d'autre part. Le monopole accordé par le brevet est-il à remettre en cause ou doit-il être modifié du fait de cette évolution ? Autant de questions auxquelles le présent ouvrage contribue à répondre.
