The present two volumes complete the catalogue, taking in every piece carved between about 1200 and 1550; and it is satisfying to report that a further volume, on the post-medieval ivories, was published by my colleague Marjorie Trusted in 2013."--Preface, p. 9.

Book Ivory Carvings in Early Medieval England

Download or read book Ivory Carvings in Early Medieval England written by John Beckwith and published by Harvey Miller. This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ivory carvings are among the most beautiful achievements of medieval art. They reflect not only the deeply religious nature of the medieval world but also express the consummate skill and highly creative minds of those who carved them. The English craftsmen of the Early Middle Ages produced such renowned masterpieces as the Bury St Edmunds Cross and the Lewis Chessmen. John Beckwith provides a definitive study of English ivory carving from 700-1200 AD, which describes and illustrates over 160 carvings. He places the ivories in relation to contemporary illuminated manuscripts and enamel work. Through fascinating and lively portraits of some of the abbots and bishops who were the great patrons of their time, and in particular, Henry of Blois, bishop of Winchester, he places the art form firmly within its historical and cultural context.

With this book beginners don't have to guess how to position the knife or where to chip away. Clearly, explicitly, taking an many drawings as necessary - sometimes up to 50 for one project - the authors guide you through each project to the completion of handsome, useful, realistic finished pieces. The ten projects are actually ten lessons for building skill in carving techniques and developing confidence and proficiency in this age-old craft.

Book Assyrian Reliefs and Ivories in the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Download or read book Assyrian Reliefs and Ivories in the Metropolitan Museum of Art written by Vaughn Emerson Crawford and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1980 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Metropolitan Museum of Art houses monumental, majestic, and important works of art from the ancient world. In particular, a group of Assyrian sculptures from the Northwest Palace at Nimrud, which was constructed during the reign of Assurnasirpal II (883-859 B.C.), is remarkable both for its artistic excellence and for its technical skill. Excavated at Nimrud in the mid-nineteenth century by Sir Austen Henry Layard, an English archaeologist, the majority of these impressive, larger-than-life-size reliefs and sculptures came to the Metropolitan Museum in 1932 as gifts of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., one of the Museum's most generous supporters. Other Assyrian pieces were gifts to the Museum in 1917 from J. Pierpont Morgan, another major figure in the Metropolitan's history. An earlier donor, Benjamin Brewster, began the Museum's collection of Assyrian reliefs with a gift in 1884. In 1968, prior to the beginning of construction on the Lila Acheson Wallace Galleries of Egyptian Art, most of the Ancient Near Eastern works were placed in storage. Now, as the first stage in the reinstallation of permanent galleries for the Department of Ancient Near Eastern Art, the Assyrian sculptures may again be enjoyed in a gallery setting that reflects their original placement in the Northwest Palace at Nimrud.
