English: Jose Cadalso, poet, satirist and heir to the disappointment of Francisco de Quevedo and Baltasar Gracián, is one of the most important literary figures of the 18th century. During the reign of Carlos III, he lived the division of the two Spains by the struggle between tradition and progressivism, and it largely determined his artistic production, particularly this Cartas marruecas (Moroccan Letters). This work, in epistolary form, was written between 1773 and 1774 and was published in instalments by the newspaper El Correo de Madrid in 1789 and in book form in 1793. The use of letters as a literary genre is a clear influence of the Lettres persanes (Persian Letters) by Montesquieu and the Chinese letters by Goldsmith, although Cadalso uses the genre in a more renovated, original way. The Moroccan Letters comprise ninety epistles that intertwine three correspondents: Gazel, a young Moroccan with a desire to learn and arrive in Spain as a member of a diplomatic mission; Ben Beley, a Moroccan elder and wise man, and Nuño Núñez, a Spanish Christian prone to scepticism with whom Cadalso identifies himself. Through them, he author speaks about the situation of Spain and the Spanish, about Europe and human and moral aspects, addressing issues such as political corruption or patriotism and considerable praise to the Bourbons, while attacking the Habsburgs for their concern about their own welfare over that of the nation; he defends marriage and family, criticizes bullfighting and the inherited wealth of "incapabable men". Cadalso shows a favorable opinion on the French without being unpatriotic, but instead a progressive against ignorance and passivity. He criticizes the vices of the 18th century society in a clear, carefully style and an obviously didactic aim. This work gives birth to the so-called "issue of Spain", which will be continued by Larra, the Regenerationists and the 98 Generation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The century that followed the fall of Granada at the end of 1491 and the subsequent consolidation of Christian power over the Iberian Peninsula was marked by the introduction of anti-Arabic legislation and the development of hostile cultural norms affecting Arabic speakers. Yet as Spanish institutions of power first restricted and then eliminated Arabic language use, marginalizing Arabic-speaking communities, officially sanctioned translation to and from Arabic played an increasingly crucial role in brokering the administration of the growing Spanish empire and its overseas territories. The move on the peninsula from a regime of legal pluralism to one of religious and legal orthodoxy created new needs and institutions for Arabic translation, which simultaneously reflected, subverted, and ultimately reaffirmed the normative anti-Arabic language politics. In Good Faith examines the administrative functions and practices of the individual translators who walked the knife's edge, as the task of the Arabic-Spanish translator became both more perilous and more coveted during a volatile historical period. Despite the myriad personal and political risks run by Arabic speakers, Claire M. Gilbert argues that Arabic translation was at the core of early modern Spanish culture and society and that translators played pivotal roles in the administrative, institutional, and ideological development of Spain and its relationships, both domestic and international. Using materials from state, local, and religious archives, Gilbert develops the notion of "fiduciary translation" and uses it to paint a vivid picture of the techniques by which translators attempted to demonstrate their expertise and trustworthiness—thereby to help protect themselves, their families, and even their communities from the Inquisition and other authorities. By emphasizing the practices and networks of the individual translators themselves, Gilbert's social history of Arabic translation deepens our understanding of religious minorities, international relations, and statecraft in early modern Spain.

Book The Fruits of the Struggle in Diplomacy and War

Download or read book The Fruits of the Struggle in Diplomacy and War written by A?mad ibn al-Mahdi al-Ghazzal and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1766, the Moroccan ambassador Aḥmad ibn al-Mahdī al-Ghazzāl embarked on an unprecedented visit to Spain during a time of eased tensions between the two countries. The sultan Sidi Muḥammad ibn ‘Abdallah wanted the return of Muslim prisoners and sacred Islamic texts, while the Spanish king hoped to improve trade and security across the Strait of Gibraltar. With royal welcome and escort, al-Ghazzāl traveled for several months in order to meet with Carlos III at his summer palace north of Madrid. There they negotiated a historic treaty, and then the Moroccan ambassador made his way back to Marrakesh, where the treaty was ratified in the presence of the Spanish ambassador Jorge Juan and hundreds of freed Muslim captives. In total, the trip lasted a year and covered more than fifty Spanish cities and towns. Most remarkable, however, is the fact that al-Ghazzāl’s travelogue, in which he recorded the experience in great detail and moving prose, has been lost to history. This first full translation with critical introduction recovers his voice. It offers insight into the dawn of modern diplomacy and its overlap with literature; it looks at eighteenth-century Europe through Arab eyes; and, it explores the deep nostalgia that the Islamic past of Andalusia provoked for a Moroccan traveler who traced his family ties to exiles of the region. Finally, al-Ghazzāl’s visit has further significance as the neglected backdrop to one of Spain’s most canonical eighteenth-century works, the Moroccan Letters of José Cadalso. Thus, the world literature approach of the present introduction also reimagines the pluralism of Cadalso’s “foreign gaze” through the encounters of the actual ambassador in his own words.
