Book excerpt: In this volume distinguished historian Kenneth Maxwell collects some of his most significant writings, following Portugal's imperial journey from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean and from the coast of Asia to the mouth of the Red Sea. Maxwell takes the reader on a lively journey from Macao to the Amazon forests-each piece in the collection is a reflection of the authors driving passions. Major themes he examines are: the peopling of the Americas, the shaking up of continents, the spirit that took a precocious Portugal into its imperial venture, the play between Portugal's' extensive imperial reach into Africa and Asia and the Americas, and the rise of Brazil and its tumultuous history.

Download or read book Freedom by a Thread written by Flavio Dos Santos Gomes and published by Diasporic Africa Press. This book was released on 2017-08-12 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom by a Thread: The History of Quilombos in Brazil brings together some of the best scholars in the world working on the history of quilombos (maroon societies) in Brazil from a variety of perspectives and approaches. Over 40 percent of the total volume of captive Africans arrived in Brazil during a 400-year period of legal and contraband transatlantic slaving. If slavery penetrated every aspect of Brazilian life, so did resistance—and co-existence with it—in the form of small to large-scale quilombos. Palmares and the other quilombos built an exciting history of freedom. Yet, it is a history filled with traps and surprises, advances and setbacks, conflict and commitments, while advancing their immediate interests and more ambitious projects of liberty. These events and many others are part of the history told in this book.
Download or read book Nossa and Nuestra Am rica written by Robert Patrick Newcomb and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Brazil part of Latin America or an island unto itself? As Nossa and Nuestra Am (c)rica: Inter-American Dialogues demonstrates, this question has been debated by Brazilian and Spanish American intellectuals alike since the early nineteenth century, though it has received limited scholarly attention and its answer is less obvious than you might think. This book charts Brazil's evolving and often conflicted relationship with the idea of Latin America through a detailed comparative investigation of four crucial Latin American essayists: Uruguayan critic Jos (c) Enrique Rod 3, Brazilian writer-diplomat Joaquim Nabuco, Mexican humanist Alfonso Reyes, and S (c)rgio Buarque de Holanda, one of Brazil's preeminent historians. The author argues that Brazil plays a necessary"and necessarily problematic"role in the intellectual construction of Latin America. Nossa and Nuestra Am (c)rica will be of interest to scholars and students of Latin American and Luso-Brazilian literature and ideas, and to anyone interested in rethinking comparative approaches to literary texts written in Portuguese and Spanish.

Download or read book Native Brazil written by Hal Langfur and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest European accounts of Brazil’s indigenous inhabitants focused on the natives’ startling appearance and conduct—especially their nakedness and cannibalistic rituals—and on the process of converting them to clothed, docile Christian vassals. This volume contributes to the unfinished task of moving beyond such polarities and dispelling the stereotypes they fostered, which have impeded scholars’ ability to make sense of Brazil’s rich indigenous past. This volume is a significant contribution to understanding the ways Brazil’s native peoples shaped their own histories. Incorporating the tools of anthropology, geography, cultural studies, and literary analysis, alongside those of history, the contributors revisit old sources and uncover new ones. They examine the Indians’ first encounters with Portuguese explorers and missionaries and pursue the consequences through four centuries. Some of the peoples they investigate were ultimately defeated and displaced by the implacable advance of settlement. Many individuals died from epidemics, frontier massacres, and forced labor. Hundreds of groups eventually disappeared as distinct entities. Yet many others found ways to prolong their independent existence or to enter colonial and later national society, making constrained but pivotal choices along the way.
